and even the subtle transgressions. One should persevere and strive to do it. This means that for things like guarding, one should strive and pay attention. If one should persevere and strive to do even for subtle transgressions, then what need is there to mention the great sins of self-nature? One should know that this is what the Buddha said. Constantly subdue with diligence, the mind is like a wild horse difficult to control, the rein with a hundred sharp nails, is this Pratimoksha. Among them, "Constantly subdue with diligence" means that this mind, like a wild horse, when entering the good Dharma like a smooth road, should be constantly pulled like pulling the reins, and whipped and driven with the whip of diligence. "Mind like a wild horse" means that the mind itself is like a wild horse. "Difficult to control" means that when entering the non-virtuous Dharma like a fork in the road, it floats like the wind, and it is difficult to pull back and control with the halter. "Consistent" means suitable and becoming a cause, for the wild horse that is constantly subdued with the whip of diligence and difficult to control with the halter, it is consistent and becomes a cause to control it with a rein with a hundred sharp nails; for the mind like a wild horse that is constantly subdued with the effort of diligence and difficult to control with the halter of discipline, it is consistent and becomes a cause to subdue it with the Pratimoksha of a hundred fundamental trainings. "A hundred sharp nails" means that like the iron nails of the halter, it has many sharp points, and this Pratimoksha also has many awe-inspiring trainings, "hundred" is a word that means many, not necessarily the number one hundred. "Is this Pratimoksha" means it is like a rein. Through these, practicing as the great sage said, one should persevere and strive for transgressions, and by subduing the mind like a wild horse with the halter of Pratimoksha, it shows that one should practice Pratimoksha according to the Dharma. Practicing according to the Dharma has been explained. In order to show its benefits,

Those who, with mere words, Can turn back and not cross the boundaries, Those are the good men and horses, They will surely conquer the battlefield of afflictions. Thus it is said. "Great" means having the nature of greatness, because of wanting to learn. "Merely" means through the distinct elimination of transgressions and so on. "Turning back" means turning back from non-deeds. "Boundaries" means from the training. "Not crossing" means not transgressing. "Those are the good men and horses" means those are like intelligent horses. "From the battlefield of afflictions" means the nature of afflictions, because of harming oneself and others, is like a battlefield, that is, from that. "Will surely conquer" means being able to exhaust afflictions and obtain the fruit of liberation from suffering. Those, through their individual liberation, truly practice, and through the way of surely conquering the battlefield of afflictions, show the benefit of truly practicing. That benefit has been explained. In order to show the faults of not truly practicing, it is said: Who does not have this rein, Will never be satisfied at any time, Those are disturbed by the battlefield of afflictions, They will wander between stopping and leaving. Thus it is said. "Who does not have this rein" means the non-Buddhists do not have it, because they have not truly learned. "Will never be satisfied at any time" means those who enjoy desires will not be satisfied many times, because they do not incline towards discipline. "Disturbed" means defeated. "Stopping and leaving" means pacifying through the increased discipline, thereby dwelling in the peace of the increased mind, therefore dwelling is the discipline itself, that is, separating from that. "Will wander" means wandering many times in the cycle of suffering such as the lower realms. Those who have not learned and are not satisfied, who do not truly practice, because they are separated from discipline, Cannot obtain peace and will wander in the cycle of suffering, through this way, the faults of not truly practicing are shown. The faults of not truly practicing have been explained. Those are the things to do at the beginning, that is, the rituals. Now the activity of reciting the sutras will be explained, for that, in the manner of requesting.
