There are four seasons for recitation: the empty day of the middle winter month, the full moon day of the last winter month, the empty day of the last winter month, and the full moon day of the first spring month. Among them, when reciting the Pratimoksha on the empty day of the middle winter month, one should say: 'Venerable ones, half of the winter months have passed, and one and a half months remain.' When reciting on the full moon day of the last winter month, one should say: 'Venerable ones, one month of the late winter has passed, and one month remains.' When reciting on the empty day of the last winter month, one should say: 'Venerable ones, one and a half months of the late winter have passed, and half a month remains.' When reciting on the full moon day of the first spring month, one should say: 'Venerable ones, two months of winter have passed, and nothing remains.' Similarly, there are also four times for reciting the Uposatha during the spring season: the empty day of the first spring month, the full moon day of the middle spring month, the empty day of the middle spring month, and the full moon day of the last spring month. Among them, when reciting on the empty day of the first spring month, one should say: 'Venerable ones, half of the spring months have passed, and one and a half months remain.' When reciting on the full moon day of the middle spring month, one should say: 'Venerable ones, one month of spring has passed, and one month remains.' When reciting on the empty day of the middle spring month, one should say: 'Venerable ones, one and a half months of spring have passed, and half a month remains.' When reciting on the full moon day of the last spring month, one should say: 'Venerable ones, two months of spring have passed, and nothing remains.' These are the mantras for reciting the Sutra of Individual Liberation, recited every half month or on the fifteenth day. When reciting the Uposatha for auspiciousness, or when reciting the Uposatha at times of calamity, etc., when it is not a full moon or new moon day, in addition to the mantras mentioned earlier, one should also state the number of days that have passed in the waxing or waning phase of the first or second month, and how many remain, for example:

Venerable ones, the first day of the waxing moon of the first month of Soga (the fourth month of the Tibetan calendar) has passed. One month and twenty-nine days have passed, and so on. These are said in order to be skilled in worldly terminology, to keep in mind the passing of time, to be weary of samsara and strive for virtue, and to fully understand the days of fasting. The method of counting these is that the abbot of the sangha counts each month by threading fifteen bamboo sticks on a string, counting one stick each day, and then the disciplinarian checks the abbot and reports to the sangha each day. The deletion of leap months is done according to the system of the king. Knowledge of the constellations should be known according to the system of the astrologer. Venerable ones, aging and death are imminent, and the teachings of the Teacher will also perish, so venerable ones should diligently engage in yoga. Through these words, one should also be weary of samsara and strive for virtue. So, why here should one be weary of samsara and strive for virtue? Why mention that aging and death are imminent, and that the teachings of the Teacher will also perish? This is to show that the main cause of pure conduct has completely declined. Thus, pure conduct is accomplished in two ways: body and place. Among these, what is accomplished through the body is enduring the asceticism of the body, and continuously engaging in pure conduct. To show that these have completely declined, it is said that "aging and death are imminent," which means that not being able to endure the asceticism of the body, and discontinuously engaging in pure conduct, pure conduct will completely decline, in that order. Why are other limbs of existence and faults such as sorrow not mentioned, but only aging and death are mentioned? Because youth and life can accomplish pure conduct, while aging and death will become the cause of complete decline, so the main cause is mentioned, and others should also be understood incidentally. How is it with the place? The place refers to the place that the Buddha taught as the place where pure conduct arises. To show that these have completely declined, the teachings of the Teacher
