A verse was spoken, saying, "Kalpa" is a distinction of time, namely the great kalpa. A kalpa is a koti kalpa. "Koti" is a distinction of number, namely the eighth place. "Among all" also refers to countless kotis, which are difficult to find even among hundreds, thus showing many sections. "Pratimoksha" refers to the nature of scripture and realization. "Hearing" refers to hearing the nature of words with ear consciousness. "Grasping" refers to the subsequent discernment of the nature of words and the nature of meaning by the mind consciousness. "Holding" refers to grasping the nature of words and meaning, that is, not forgetting. "Difficult to obtain" means that all three are difficult to obtain, like a blind turtle inserting its neck into the yoke hole in the great ocean, it is difficult to obtain the wealth of others and one's own wealth, etc., even after countless kotis of great kalpas. "Practice" refers to truly practicing and diligently engaging in the meaning of the realization of Pratimoksha with body, speech, and mind. This is even more difficult to obtain than the previous three, because true practice depends on diligence. Therefore, the Pratimoksha should be spoken, listen respectfully, and follow and diligently practice as the great sage said, this is the concluding statement. Thus, this verse shows through the gate of scripture and realization that Pratimoksha is difficult to obtain, therefore one should truly strive for Pratimoksha. Hearing, grasping, and holding are difficult to obtain.

At the time of being born in the manner of arising. That which is called "happiness" is because it is the cause of obtaining the happiness of liberation, and because the fruit will become happiness. For example, just as something like "unhappiness," the arising of the Buddhas is happiness. Teaching the Dharma is also happiness. That which is called "teaching the Dharma is also happiness" means that teaching the twelve branches belonging to the scriptures, such as the Sutra Pitaka, is also the cause of happiness, and because the fruit will become happiness, it is happiness. Harmonious Sangha is happiness. That which is called "harmonious Sangha is happiness" means that the Sangha, which is the nature of eight types of individuals, is united in discipline, view, conduct, and livelihood, becoming one taste and acting as one, is also the cause of happiness, and because the fruit will become happiness, it is happiness. The asceticism of those who are harmonious is happiness. That which is called "the asceticism of those who are harmonious is happiness" means that the asceticism of practicing the three trainings, such as higher discipline, which afflicts afflictions and misconduct, is also the cause of happiness, and because the fruit has become the cause of happiness, it is happiness. Thus, that verse shows that the arising of the Three Jewels and their fruit is happiness itself, so one should strive for individual liberation. Relying on a virtuous friend is the door to happiness, and after having mastered striving for individual liberation, it is said, "Seeing the noble ones is happiness, associating with the virtuous is happiness." The term "noble ones" refers to Arhats and others, who are called noble because they have gone far from sins. The term "seeing" means that if they are seen as virtuous friends, it will become the cause of happiness. The term "virtuous ones" refers to virtuous individuals, Bodhisattvas, and others who arise from among ordinary people, who are called virtuous because they benefit others and are certain. The term "associating is happiness" means that if they live together equally, it will become the cause of happiness. Thus, this half verse shows that seeing the noble ones and associating with the virtuous is the prerequisite for the complete happiness of this life and the next, so relying on a virtuous friend is the door to happiness, and one should strive for individual liberation.

Having empowered the abandonment of bad friends as a means of happiness to properly practice individual liberation, it is said: If children are not seen, then there will always be happiness. The so-called "children" refers to those who have perverse wisdom and wrong views, because they possess the characteristics of children. The so-called "If not seen, then there will always be happiness" means that if one does not associate with sinful friends, then one will always be happy in every way. Thus, this half verse shows that one should properly practice individual liberation by abandoning bad friends as a means of happiness. Relying on the qualities of a virtuous spiritual friend, having empowered the proper practice of individual liberation as a means of happiness, it is said: Seeing the virtuous is happiness, seeing the learned is happiness, those who are completely liberated from rebirth, seeing the Arhats is happiness. This is one verse that was spoken. The qualities of a virtuous spiritual friend are of two types: relative and ultimate. The relative also has two types: abiding in the limb of tranquility and abiding in the limb of insight. Among them, abiding in the limb of tranquility is indicated by "the virtuous," because abiding in morality allows the mind to be placed in equanimity. Therefore, seeing them is happiness, because the virtuous are the cause of happiness by turning away from the intention to harm others. Abiding in the limb of insight is indicated by "the learned," because hearing much gives rise to wisdom. Seeing them is happiness, because those who possess learning, by the power of learning, dispel wrong views, regret, and doubt, and are the cause of happiness. The ultimate is indicated by "those who are completely liberated from rebirth, the Arhats," the so-called "those who are completely liberated from rebirth" means liberation by the nature of not being born again in samsara. The so-called "Arhats" indicates those who have conquered the enemies of afflictions. Because the word "Arhats" may be led to other meanings, in order to show the distinction of the fruit of Arhatship, it is said "those who are completely liberated from rebirth." Seeing that happiness is that obtaining the Arhatship is auspicious.
