In order to be completely purified, one should separately examine the actions of the body, separately examine the actions of speech, and separately examine the actions of the mind. The benefits are the ten benefits of morality: obtaining the Dharma that precedes the supreme austerity in the order of no regret; dying without regret; the sound of fame spreading in the ten directions; falling asleep in comfort and waking up in comfort; when falling asleep, the gods will protect; without fear or dread of evil from others, and without panic; even if enemies find an opportunity, they will be helped by the power of completely pure morality, such as protection; even if yakshas and non-human beings, who are inherently evil, find an opportunity, they will be helped by the power of completely pure morality, such as protection; easily obtaining Dharma robes and so on from others; and all aspirations, such as where one wishes to be born, will be completely fulfilled. What is guarding the senses? It is relying on the vow of morality, constantly guarding mindfulness, constantly practicing mindfulness, completely guarding the mind with mindfulness, abiding in a state of equality, and even when the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind separately know forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tactile objects, and dharmas, one does not grasp at signs, nor does one grasp at manifest signs, but only to prevent sinful, unwholesome dharmas from flowing out following the mind, one practices and guards the senses, and the senses also guard, therefore it is guarding the gates of the senses. What is knowing the measure of food? Having thus guarded the senses, one eats food after separately examining it, not for the sake of play, not for the sake of nourishing fatness, not for the sake of showing off, not for the sake of adornment, but for the sake of keeping this body in place, for the sake of living, for the sake of eliminating hunger, and for the sake of pure conduct.

It is for the benefit of walking, for the sake of abandoning old feelings, for the sake of not generating new feelings, for the sake of my survival, having strength, happiness, and innocence, and abiding in happiness, thinking in this way, one eats food. What is the reason for striving without sleeping in the upper and lower parts of the night? Like this, just by knowing the amount of food, one can make the mind completely subdued to those dharmas that will be obstructed by walking and sitting. In the first period of the night, one also makes the mind completely subdued to those dharmas that will be obstructed by walking and sitting. In the middle period of the night, one comes out of the monastery, washes one's feet outside the monastery, enters the monastery, lies down on the right side, places one foot on top of the other, thinking of the perception of light, mindfulness, and awareness, and falls asleep while maintaining a state of wakefulness. In the last period of the night, one quickly wakes up, making the mind completely subdued to those dharmas that will be obstructed by walking and sitting. What is acting with awareness? Like this, striving not to sleep, like this, maintaining awareness in walking and returning, looking slightly, looking around, contracting, stretching, wearing the monastic skirt, wearing the Dharma robe, carrying the alms bowl, eating, drinking, chewing, tasting, going, staying, sitting, sleeping, not sleeping, speaking, and dispelling the drowsiness of sleep, one maintains awareness. This shows that even the guarding of the precepts is difficult to do, let alone guarding the sense doors, etc., what more needs to be said? "Even if the precepts are completely pure, a good friend is extremely difficult to obtain." This shows that relying on a good spiritual friend, listening to and contemplating the Dharma, having no obstacles, increasing generosity, and the adornment of a renunciate are rare. What is a good spiritual friend? Through eight reasons, one can know that he is a good spiritual friend with all perfect aspects. What are the eight reasons? Discipline.
