The cause itself is called non-other. The transgression is as before. The reason for monks gathering within the boundary and not being allowed to eat is that when in Shravasti, at that time, the monk Devadatta gathered many monks within the boundary of the monastery and showed signs that were not in accordance with food, the monks heard and slandered, scolded in various ways, and established the precept of gathering and not being allowed to eat. When sick, it is called time, later many monks became ill and asked the doctor, who said that eating salad would be beneficial, so they heard and reported. When sick, they are allowed to eat salad, because sick monks cannot live on just one food. When working, some monks made brooms and mandalas, etc., and were tired and lying down, after hearing this, they were allowed. Work refers to doing the work of stupas and sanghas, or as small as making a small mandala in the place of illness. The time of the road is when a monk is on the road, and they are tired from the road and cannot walk, so they are allowed. They have gone one yojana or returned from half a yojana. Taking a boat means that because the water is flooding, there is no time to gather, and they have gone one and a half yojanas. Festivals, called time, are given separately because there is no time to participate in their respective grand festivals. The time of ascetic food refers to those who have left home in the mandalas of outsiders, and generally give religious food, etc. The transgression is as before. The time is in accordance with them, which means permission. The fault is that if one eats within the boundary with the idea and doubt of being within the boundary, then each transgression will occur. Whether the sangha is numerous, or those who have not received the bhikkhu vows make up the number, then an act of wrongdoing will be committed. Coriander and salt, no matter how much is mixed, or if the donor offers it in their respective places, then there is no fault. The reason for not allowing non-time eating is that when in Shravasti, At that time, the venerable Maudgalyayana ordained seventeen youths, including Upali, and gave them full ordination. When they went to beg for alms in the morning, they were seen by women who exclaimed: "Oh, how wonderful, they were just born and their mouths are filled with food."

They said, "Don't you even know when you're entering a cesspool?" Those monks were ashamed and thought, "We would rather not have heard such harsh words as 'lowly food-cutters.'" That day, they did not eat, and they practiced virtue as much as they could. When they were unable, they lay down to sleep. The attendant, delighted, saw them and said, "Are you the kind who lie down like this after eating others' food?" They replied, "We have not eaten." And they explained the situation in detail. At that time, the people of the city, the delighted groups, gathered food and drink and went to Jeta Grove. The seventeen groups saw them and said, "Giving food and drink will turn into merit." Those people also gave food and drink to the seventeen groups. After they had eaten and were full, they divided into groups of two or three and began to recite. The attendant, delighted, saw them and said, "Just now you were lying down, and now you are engaging in diligence?" They replied, "Giving food has five qualities: giving life, giving beauty, giving strength, giving happiness, and giving eloquence. We begged for food from householders and ate it." The attendant said, "Do you eat food at an improper time?" They replied, "We cannot find food at the proper time, and we cannot bear to starve to death." The attendant heard this, scolded them in various ways, and established the precept that they should not eat at an improper time. The term "bhikshu" refers to the seventeen groups and others like them. The term "improper time" refers to two times: after noon and before dawn, which are said to be improper times. Except when one is ill. The term "eating" refers to the five foods and five drinks entering the throat. If one thinks that an improper time is the proper time, or if one eats with doubt, one will commit a downfall. If one thinks that the proper time is the improper time, or if one eats with doubt, one will commit a misdeed. The basis for the discussion of not eating stale food is as follows: At that time, in Shravasti, there was a bhikshu named Black, who lived in various cities and towns and went begging for food in the morning. If he found wet and dry food while begging, he would eat the wet food immediately and store the dry food in a container. When it rained, the wind blew, or it was foggy, he would throw the food into the water.
