If one eats without making *lhakmar* (Tibetan: ལྷག་མར་, the remaining portion of food), it becomes a transgression. If one eats food without making *lhakmar* while doubting whether it has been abandoned, it becomes a misdeed. Gruel and *thukpa* (Tibetan noodle soup): if placed tilted, it is not visible, and if the marks of five fingers are visible, it is considered abandoned. There is no abandonment in drinking beverages. Making *lhakmar* is as follows: if a *bhikshu* (monk) has abandoned food and later wishes to eat it, he should sit squatting on a mat in the presence of a *bhikshu* who is eating food, without diminishing his conduct. He should ask that *bhikshu* to make *lhakmar* and then eat. If one *bhikshu* makes *lhakmar*, it is permissible for all to eat. The origin story of not allowing food that has not been made *lhakmar* to be a source of strength is as follows: When they were in Shravasti, a householder's enjoyment diminished, so he offered it to a *bhikshu* and had him ordained. That elderly monk, because his memory was failing, constantly committed transgressions. So, the *khenpo* (abbot) had him sit squatting in front of him and made him confess his transgressions. He became very angry, and later the householder invited the *sangha* (monastic community). After the *bhikshus* had been offered a meal there, the two *bhikshus* also ate food and went to a nearby village to give food. When they said they had eaten food, those people said, "Make *lhakmar* and take it." The two took it and went to Shravasti. The elderly monk was made to make *lhakmar*. The teacher went to filter water and when he returned and asked, "Has *lhakmar* been made?" they replied, "*Lhakmar* has been made." After eating, the teacher said, "You have eaten food that has not been made *lhakmar*, so you have committed a transgression." The monk said, "I did not see a transgression." He was informed, and scolded for saying that it was not the action of a *bhikshu*. From now on, it was forbidden to use food that had not been made *lhakmar* as a source of strength, and a precept was established. The *bhikshu* "who" refers to the elderly monk, and others are similar to him. "Knowing" means knowing oneself or being instructed by others. "*Bhikshu*" means one who has entered this Dharma. "Knowing abandonment after eating food" means being full and satisfied. "Not making *lhakmar*" means making *lhakmar*, which is the fifth of foods and seasonings. "Strength through time" means repeatedly acting as strength, seeking faults, and intending to reveal transgressions.
