The term 'Ra ni mdo bshad' (ར་ནི་མདོ་བཤད་) signifies the commentary on the Pratimoksha Sutra. The phrase 'since it has been treated' (གསོ་སྤྱོད་བྱས་གྱུར་) means to strictly observe and protect the precepts. The statement 'that discipline has been protected' (ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་དེ་ནི་བསྲུང་བྱས་) implies that merely performing the Uposatha is insufficient; one must diligently engage in safeguarding the precepts. It is like the tip of a yak's tail. This illustrates the analogy of cherishing the precepts as one's own eyes, not forsaking them even for the sake of one's life. Others say that when dwelling in a dense forest, the tail does not get caught on trees, does not get entangled, does not break, and does not bend; even if it gets caught or entangled, one is cautious for fear of damage or breakage. Similarly, an individual who has entered into training does not forsake the precepts even for the sake of life, as has been taught. From this point onwards, the Pratimoksha is explained. When the noble Upali first began to write, in order to prevent being obstructed or hindered, and in order to bring the compositions to completion, he relied on his chosen deity. The compositions were ultimately completed. Obstacles and hindrances were pacified, and aspirations were planted in each individual. Explaining the Pratimoksha is explaining the Pratimoksha. Whatever merit is accomplished, the accomplishment of merit refers to whatever little I have obtained from his merit. By him, it is by that very entirety of his merit, throughout the entire world. The world refers to the aggregates of appropriation, and the entire world refers to the three realms. May the state of the Mighty Sage be attained! This means that the Mighty Sage is the Tathagata, the lord of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. The state refers to the qualities and means of the Tathagata. 'May it be attained' means may all sentient beings of the three realms become like this. The Pratimoksha Sutra is complete, which is said because the composition has been completed, so that the listeners can take a breath. The explanation of the Pratimoksha, written merely as an aid to memory, is complete. Translated and finalized by the Indian abbot Zaranadhara and the revising translator, the monk Rinchen Zangpo. The explanations of the Pratimoksha, written merely as an aid to memory.
