and had no robes either. That bhikkhuni also said, "I have little gain and no robes either." That bhikkhu then gave a reddish-yellow patchwork robe to that bhikkhuni. After that, when the Thus-Gone-One was traveling with his retinue in various places, he looked back at the hearers in his retinue and saw that bhikkhu coming with only a simple upper and lower garment, and said, "Do the bhikkhus not have any gains while staying here this summer?" Venerable one, yes. The Venerable Ānanda replied. "Then why does this bhikkhu not have a patchwork robe?" He said, "He gave the gains to the bhikkhuni who was his former wife." Is it permissible to give to a bhikkhuni who is not a relative and also to receive? He replied, "It is permissible to give and also to receive." The Buddha established the training, forbidding giving to a bhikkhuni who is not a relative. Again, a bhikkhu is one who has entered this Dharma, that is, an elder. A relative is one within seven generations of parents. A bhikkhuni is one who has entered this Dharma. A robe is one of the seven materials. Giving is giving permanently. A downfall is as before. An offense occurs if one thinks that someone who is not a relative is one, or if one is in doubt. If one thinks that someone who is a relative is not, or if one is in doubt, one commits a misdeed. There is no downfall if a robe is stolen by thieves, or if it is given at the time of ordination, or if it is given after redemption, or if it is given for teaching the Dharma well, or if it is given generally to the bhikkhuni sangha. The basis for not allowing the making of robes for non-relatives is as follows: It was in Śrāvastī. At that time, a bhikkhuni named Sbedma had five robes that were all worn out, so she searched for cloth and found it. She entrusted it to the group of six bhikkhus to sew. The group of six bhikkhus thought, "If we don't sew it, she will have no robes and it will be an obstacle to her practice, and she will be scolded. If we sew it, she will later mingle with the group of seventeen and all the wanderers, so we must find a way." Later, the group of six also came. In the middle of the robe, they sewed with threads of five colors a picture of the former sewer and Sbedma embracing each other, and then, as if watching, they sent the robe to the bhikkhunis. Later

Seeing the nuns like that, (people) ridiculed them, saying, "Oh my, if the vaginas of the sisters grow long, they will match perfectly." They also did this to Gautami (སྐྱེ་དགུའི་བདག་མོ་, Sanskrit: Prajāpatī, Romanized Sanskrit: Prajāpatī, literal meaning: Mother of all beings). The group of six monks, because of their nature of liking bad behavior, are like this, they heard these ridicules, they slandered in various ways, and therefore established the precepts. The so-called bhikkhu refers to the vagina. In addition, the so-called bhikkhuni, and clothes and wool, are the same as before. The so-called "doing" refers to sewing. If a non-relative thought or doubt arises towards a bhikkhuni, each time a downfall is committed. If a non-relative thought or doubt arises towards a bhikkhuni, each time a misdeed is committed. The story about not allowing bhikkhunis to travel with many companions, and walking on the road, happened when they were in Shravasti (མཉན་དུ་ཡོད་པ་, Sanskrit: Śrāvastī, Romanized Sanskrit: Śrāvastī, literal meaning: City of Hearing). At that time, the group of six monks thought: those monks who have few affairs, even if they travel or return, can get a lot of offerings, but we are like frogs in a well, we can't go anywhere, and the offerings we get are very few. If we go to alms and travel, our twelve maids will also do the same. If you leave, my village, temple and preacher will be gone. So they said, "Then, you go too." When they said, "It's not good to do this," the group of six monks entangled and said, "When and where is it not allowed?" The group of six monks asked others to prepare dry food and loans, and as a result, the dry food was used up in loans and breakfast, and then they set off. Men and women, old and young, walked together in a mixed way. People pointed and said, "This is his wife, this is her husband." Those people said, "Yes, yes." As a result, an elderly monk also joined their team, those people were very unhappy, and that monk returned, and told those words to those monks. They heard these, and established the precept of not allowing bhikkhunis to travel with companions. The so-called "unless there is an emergency" refers to a bhikkhuni in Shravasti, because she has no companions, if she lives with the monks, the monks are not willing to travel with her, so the bhikkhunis were forced to disrobe, so this situation was allowed.
