If the appointed person does not possess each of these five qualifications, then each appointment will result in a downfall. For the Sangha, each appointment will result in an offense. It is not allowed to teach the Dharma after sunset, this happened in Shravasti. In the past, the teaching of Dharma to the Bhikshunis was done by the Blessed One himself. Later, the Blessed One commanded the elder Bhikshus to teach the Dharma to the Bhikshunis. When it was the turn of the Venerable Nanda to teach the Dharma, he was urged to teach, but he replied, "The Blessed One is still alive." So he did not teach. The Blessed One allowed the teaching of Dharma to the Bhikshunis through his mouth. The Bhikshuni Utpalavarna, who was skilled in Dharma, often asked many questions, and it was late at night when she returned. The temple door was closed, and she could not get out. Not far from Shravasti, there was a monastery. At night, the Bhikshuni stayed in a tree hollow outside. Five hundred robbers were also looking for an opportunity. The Bhikshuni Utpalavarna perceived this, and she transformed herself into an army of noble beings. Those with malicious intentions did not find an opportunity and left. The next day, she entered the monastery. The heretics and others said that the Bhikshunis used the good and bad Dharma like prostitutes, and they mocked them. After hearing these words, a precept was established, prohibiting the teaching of Dharma to the Bhikshunis after sunset. A Bhikshu is called the Venerable Nanda. An appointment by the Sangha means that the teacher of the Bhikshunis is appointed through a request and karma. Sunset means that even if appointed in this way, if the Dharma is taught after sunset, it will result in a downfall. Instructing the Bhikshunis means explaining the three trainings. The downfall is the same as before. Sunset means that if one thinks the sun has set or has doubts about it and teaches the Dharma, it will result in a downfall. If one thinks the sun has not set or has doubts about it, one will be blamed, resulting in an offense. Even if one teaches the Dharma at night, or sits at the temple door, or sits in the center of the city, there is no fault if the door of meditation is closed. It is forbidden to say that one teaches the Dharma to the Bhikshunis for a small amount of food. This story happened in Shravasti.

Then, the Blessed One commanded the Venerable Nanda, saying, "You should teach the Dharma to the nuns." Subsequently, Gautama's foster mother, along with her five hundred attendants, listened to the Dharma from Nanda. Afterward, Nanda taught the Dharma with profound words and letters, but the women were generally of shallow wisdom, and although they did not understand, they dared not ask again. Later, the foster mother went to the Blessed One, prostrated, and reported, "Because we are not familiar, we dare not ask, and we did not understand the Dharma that was taught." The Blessed One, in order to familiarize them, instructed, "Give them some food or items in the evening." Later, the foster mother sent a nun to deliver milk porridge to the Venerable Nanda. At the gate of Jeta Grove Monastery, the Venerable Upavana was walking and saw it. He asked what it was, and was told it was milk porridge to be offered to the Venerable Nanda. Upavana said, "The Venerable Nanda teaches the Dharma to the nuns for a little food." Because he was disparaging the monks who were content with little, he heard these words, and it was forbidden to say such things again, and a precept for learning was established. Again, "monk" means Upavana, and others are similar to this. "For a little food" means the five foods and five drinks, any of which is acceptable. "To teach" means the higher discipline and higher wisdom. "Fall" means the same as before. "Fault" is if the monks say that they teach the Dharma to the nuns for a little food, then all will fall. If what is said is true because of a little food, there is no fault in saying it. The origin of not allowing the donation of monastic robes to non-relative nuns is in a soft place. At that time, there was an old couple, husband and wife, who possessed wealth and livestock and enjoyed abundant offerings, but later the offerings and wealth and livestock decreased, and both husband and wife listened well to the Vinaya spoken by the Blessed One and became ordained. The husband was a householder, possessing utensils, and became wealthy. The wife was a nun, possessing monastic robes and utensils.
