"Water and grass," etc., refer to all places where water can be used. "Planting or causing to plant" means oneself or causing others to plant. The offense is that if one plants or uses water knowing or suspecting that there is life in water containing living beings, one commits a downfall for each instance. If one perceives life in water that has no life, one commits a minor offense for each instance. If one changes the course of water in a field containing living beings, one commits as many downfalls as there are sentient beings that die.
