At that time, the venerable Maudgalyāyana committed an offense, and did not rectify it according to the Dharma. Therefore, monks who desired benefit and happiness said, "Venerable one, please confess your offense!" The one who committed the offense said, "I see the accumulation of offenses. You see it, therefore you have committed an offense." "We have those who have attained enlightenment in our lineage, but you have ordained from a different lineage, so who among you has attained enlightenment?" He boasted and retorted, therefore he was included in the category of retorting to admonishment by both request and karma. Then I spoke of five faults, like a bird in the forest uttering its own sound, as if having made an agreement. Now, no matter what anyone says, I will not speak. Other ব্রহ্মচারী (brahmacārī,梵文羅馬字,梵文天城體,梵文,净行者) who desire benefit and happiness repeatedly said, "Please confess your offense!" Because I did not speak, I was included in the category of not answering. However, both not speaking and retorting were done repeatedly, so it sounded unpleasant, and retorting was not allowed, therefore the precepts were established for training. The so-called retorting to admonishment means thinking of retorting to admonishment, and then making others understand with words. The fault is, if asked, "Has the monk ordained?" and answering, "Has not ordained," that is an offense. If saying, "Did the monk see the offender carrying a bowl?" but saying, "Did he see walking with feet?" that becomes an offense. If asked, "Did you see carrying sugarcane and roots?" even if relaying it to others, it becomes an offense. If an executioner is leading someone to execution, thinking with compassion that conditioned phenomena are selfless, and then saying, "Did not see," there is no fault. The origin of not allowing the laying of cushions on a Saṅgha bed without a covering is in Nyantu The monks laid out beds and mattresses on the Saṅgha bed without a covering, and without collecting them, a householder invited the monks. The Blessed One thought the mattresses were dirty, so he did not go there. The monks were under a tree, clouds of various colors gathered, and rain was imminent, so the mattresses were soiled. Alas! Patron, faith is exhausting flesh and blood.

If alms are given, then the monks will use them without restraint, therefore, the Blessed One collected the beds and chairs. Later, the monks arrived. Thereafter, it is forbidden to go to the village without tidying up the bedding, this is the precept. Sangha means the Sangha of the four directions. Bed or small bed means actually used up. A cushion with filling means filled with cotton wool. Gorbu means a small bed cover. Without a cover means not covered on top. Cushion means for oneself (to use). Put in a cushion means for others (to use). Not spread out means for oneself (to use). Not allowed to spread out means for others (to use). Leaving from there means leaving from the vicinity. Unless there is such a situation, it means that there are only two lay people, and the weaker one becomes a monk, wanders around, and runs away. One night in a temple, he sleeps contemptuously on the bedding. In the morning, he says, "I am leaving," and hands over the bedding, but it is not taken away for a long time. The householder chases after him, and the sound of beating and scolding reaches his ears. Such a fault occurs, or eight great obstacles occur, etc. Even if he leaves without spreading out the bedding, there is no fault. There are two ways in which bedding becomes unusable: wind, rain, and sun. A monk should not entrust bedding to five kinds of people: those without shame, those who are alone, the old, the sick, and all those who have not received full ordination. The origin of leaving without tidying up the bedding is in Shravasti. Two monks from the south were going to pay homage to the Blessed One, and they went to Shravasti. There, the old monk obtained bedding and lodging. The new monk did not get a bed when the bedding was distributed, and that young man was weak, so he cut grass and submerged it up to his knees, and then lay down. The old monk also laid grass. Neither of them collected the grass. Nor did they entrust it to a monk friend when leaving. The monks were receiving alms in the householders' homes. The Blessed One wanted to inspect the bedding, and was led to the bathing hall. That dwelling was also hot, and the ground was damp, so worms entered the grass, and the worms entered the room.
