Before the eighth precept, one should set up a mandala, offer tormas and offerings, and preach the Dharma near the tree before cutting it down. If inauspicious signs appear, cutting is not allowed, as the Buddha said, and these precepts were established at that time. Later, while in Shravasti, the group of six monks would cut down or have others cut down trees, grass, and flowers with their own hands. Because of cutting down or having others cut down, they were ridiculed by outsiders, Upon hearing this, the Buddha established the precept of not destroying the dwelling places of beings from the collection of seeds. The term 'monk' refers to the group of six monks, as well as others similar to them. There are five types of seeds: root seeds, stem seeds, joint seeds, graft seeds, and seed seeds. Root seeds refer to licorice, mint, lemongrass, watercress, and other plants that grow from planting roots. Stem seeds refer to sugarcane, ashoka trees, willows, and other plants that grow from stems. Joint seeds refer to plants that grow from joints after planting. Graft seeds refer to pears, pomegranates, peaches, and so on. Seed seeds refer to barley, rice, millet, and so on. The dwelling place of beings refers to insects, butterflies, worms, moss, and so on, which are called beings because they live on trees. Therefore, destroying, uprooting, or cutting down their dwelling places will result in a downfall. Regarding the above five types of seeds, if one perceives it as a root seed, and perceives something green as blue, cutting it down or having it cut down will result in a downfall. If one has doubts about a green plant, it will also result in a downfall. If one perceives something dry as green and cuts it down, it will result in a minor offense. The same applies to doubt. Just as there are four situations for root seeds, the same four situations should be applied to the remaining four types of seeds. If a monk burns the four types of seeds with fire, making them unable to grow, or throws them into water, making them unable to grow, or pounds them in a mortar, making them unable to grow, he will commit five downfalls and five minor offenses. Using the five types of seeds, placing them in a dry place, or pouring hot liquid on them, dragging them with wood, and damaging them, is the same as before. If a monk cuts down a tree with one method, he will commit one minor offense and also one downfall.

It is done. If many trees are cut down with one method, one minor offense is committed, but many downfalls occur. Similarly, one, two, or three methods, or even many methods, apply in the same way. Flowers, leaves, and branches also apply as above, and if green ones are cut, there will be a downfall. Withered ones are minor offenses. Whether dry ones are taken out from the water, or mushrooms and rock tripe are picked, there will be a downfall. The origin of mocking and sarcasm is in Rajagriha. At that time, the Venerable Kāludāyin spread seats and food on the path of the Sangha. At that time, the two friends and landowners did not receive food and lodging because they were unsightly. Later, Kāludāyin said, "We two have been tormented." Later, in front of Bhadra, if you are also appointed to spread bedding, you will torment us like Kāludāyin. Bhadra said, "You two should not say that, the Venerable Kāludāyin is praised by the Buddha as the best in spreading bedding." When this was heard, it was ordered to include mocking in the count of both solicitation and work. Although he was included in the count of mocking, later the name of Kāludāyin was not mentioned, and some monks secretly satirized, "Don't torment us like that." Or openly mocked, which was heard. Mocking was forbidden, and it was stipulated that mocking and sarcasm, meaning if one thinks of mocking and speaks it out, there will be a downfall. The minor offense is that even if the Sangha includes a monk in the count of mocking, if he mocks or satirizes that monk who does the twelve kinds of tasks, there will be a downfall for each one. Even if included in the count of work, if he mocks those monks who are appointed to the twelve kinds of tasks but do not do them, there will be a downfall. Even if the Sangha includes a monk in the count of mocking, if he mocks those who are not appointed to the twelve kinds of tasks but do them, there will be a downfall. If that monk is not included in the count of mocking, then whether the monk does the work or not, mocking them will completely lead to a downfall. The origin of answering the exhortation wrongly is the monastery inhabited by the enemies of Kauśāmbī.
