Thinking and thinking, going on time from dawn. The monk Mewazhi went for alms on that day and returned, met a Brahmin, and (the monk) said, "I forgot." The next day, they made an appointment, but that monk did not come on time. The Brahmin saw him walking elsewhere and asked, "Monk, why don't you come here?" Is that the end of the matter? I need to serve the teacher and the lama, and I also need to teach the Dharma to the patrons and the assembled Brahmins." The Brahmin asked, "Are you deliberately avoiding me and breaking the appointment?" (The monk) replied, "That's right." The Brahmin's sons heard this and said unhappily, "Those practitioners are shameless liars." So they scolded him in various ways and established the discipline of taming. "Knowing" means examining. "Lying" has nine aspects: being judged as defeated, remaining, falling, being at fault, being without root, entering into wrong conduct, entering into wrong views, entering into wrong rituals, and entering into wrong livelihood. Falling means that beings fall into hell, animals, hungry ghosts, and other evil destinies, and suffer the pain of burning and boiling. If a monk hides his thoughts but says, "I saw it, I doubt it," that is falling. The origin of the dispute between monks due to people's faults is: When the Blessed One was living in Shravasti, the six groups of monks quarreled because of other people's faults, such as calling others blind, lame, hunchbacked, deformed fingers, dwarfs, stuttering, drooping lips, big heads, and so on. The monks therefore felt depressed, uncomfortable, and ashamed, thus hindering good deeds. After hearing this, they reported to the Buddha, and the Buddha scolded the six groups of monks, saying, "This is not the behavior of a practitioner, it is unreasonable." So he scolded them in various ways and established the precepts. Falling means falling into the three evil paths, so it is called falling. If these falls are not repented, they will obscure all good dharmas, so it is called falling. The monk thought of arguing because of people's faults.
