After thirteen years of enlightenment, etc., flaws appeared in the flawless Vinaya, and thus the situation of establishing a place for learning the Vinaya also arose. But at that time, the Sangha of the Noble Ones, due to their sharp faculties, only kept the precepts in mind. Because they were not written down, they are referred to as unwritten and compiled. Or, the Sutra Pitaka and the Abhidhamma are transmitted and abide from one Pitaka to another, and are written for the purpose of reading them from time to time and making them objects of offering, but the Vinaya is not to be written and read or merely viewed, but to be remembered and familiarized day and night, which is also a saying. Therefore, it is also called unwritten and compiled. Or, it is both unwritten and compiled, unwritten as before, compiled is that the meaning of a hundred thousand Vinayas is compiled in the Pratimoksha. Who compiled it? It was spoken by the Lord Buddha, the master of Dharma. This "Bhikkhu merchant" refers to the Pratimoksha itself. There are five types of Bhikkhus: the self-proclaimed Bhikkhu, the Bhikkhu who begs, the Bhikkhu for name, the Bhikkhu who is free from afflictions, and the Bhikkhu who is fully ordained through solicitation and karma, but here it refers to the Bhikkhu who is fully ordained through solicitation and karma and whose precepts are complete and flawless. Why is only this one called a Bhikkhu, and not others? Because the Bhikkhu who is free from afflictions has already obtained the fruit of Nirvana and does not need to rely on the object of learning and practice. Others do not abide in the precepts and do not have precepts, so here it is said that they have the object of learning, so it does not apply to other Bhikkhus. The reason for saying "merchant" is that the Bhikkhu relies on the precepts and abides in morality, which is an example of obtaining the fruit of liberation and Nirvana and seeking benefits. Just as a merchant has goods and seeks wealth, a Bhikkhu can also seek the fruit of liberation and Nirvana with the object of unbroken and undamaged morality, but those whose precepts are broken and damaged cannot. Because the words of the precepts are used as the goods for seeking the fruit of liberation, it is said that the Bhikkhu is like a merchant.

Because the object of learning is similar to merchandise. The term "market" means that merchants reside in a place where there are various kinds of goods, or everything gathers, and each person earns profits according to their own desires. Just as the words of learning reside and rely on a similar market, race and color, human wealth, the happiness of good rebirths in higher realms, the fruit of liberation, and even nirvana, are obtained by residing and relying on this. Therefore, the discipline of learning itself is like a market with various kinds of goods. Although it appears that everything gathers there, those who enable beings, virtuous people, good rebirths, and even nirvana to be attained, cannot obtain the fruit without residing and relying on this discipline, which is like a market of precepts. Therefore, it is also shown as if everything is gathered. Some might say that the fruits of constantly entering the teachings do not depend on learning, but are obtained by residing at home, and that it is impossible for an arhat to be obtained from someone who is not a bhikkhuni. However, it is impossible to obtain without relying on discipline, because it is said in the scriptures that lay practitioners and others naturally protect the ten virtues, so it should be understood that they reside in the words of learning. Therefore, it is also said in the scriptures: "Through discipline, one obtains good rebirths in higher realms; through wisdom, one attains liberation." Thus, if one does not reside in the part of discipline, it is impossible to obtain good rebirths in higher realms, so there is no contradiction. The term "great" means that by relying on this object of learning, one can obtain the desired fruits from nirvana down to gods and humans, so it is called a great market. Or, because one can attain the great fruit of nirvana with a small amount of learning. The term "tainted by bad precepts" means that the sound of discipline is also called "rule," so those with bad rules cause extreme affliction to themselves and others, so it is like being entangled by a poisonous snake. Evil and bad rules, killing and taking what is not given, and so on, are called being tainted by bad precepts. Tainted is a metaphor for poison.
