That which is called "is" has many forms. That which is called "buying and selling" is common usage. That which is called "forsaking and falling" is that after forsaking the object, one should confess the transgression. What kind of transgression is it? When a Bhikshu sells for profit, when he buys for profit, he commits a misdeed. If he obtains a price after selling, then it is a forsaking and falling. If one buys and sells not for profit, then there is no transgression. If one buys and sells for the sake of giving to others or incurring debt, then there is no transgression. The circumstance for allowing buying and selling for the Sangha is that the Blessed One was dwelling in the multi-storied house in the city of Vaisali. At that time, northern merchants who had never seen monasteries before, newly saw the great monastery there, and said to the Bhikshus sitting there, "Venerable ones, if we offer alms, we are newly arrived and have no rice, so we will exchange goods for rice." The Blessed One did not allow buying and selling, and after reporting, the Blessed One instructed, "For the sake of the Sangha, trade rice and see the price." They requested many times in this way, and similarly, because of giving, the Sangha's alms were interrupted. The Blessed One instructed, "Buy new rice with goods, and sell all the old rice." Thus it was permitted. The twentieth forsaking and falling is complete. The last tenth of forsaking and falling is that the circumstance of not allowing the holding of leftover alms bowls is that the Blessed One was dwelling in Sravasti. At that time, Anathapindika thought to himself, after reporting, the precepts were established. The gains were very few, and he was unhappy. He climbed onto the roof and looked, and saw sixty tired people gathered and sitting in the garden, and thought, if I cannot obtain gains there, my name should not be called Anathapindika. So he went there, taught them the Dharma, and made them have faith. One of them said, "Venerable one, if we offer something, what is needed?" He replied, "I need an alms bowl." If there is no alms bowl, if we offer goods, how much is it worth? He replied, "Sixty Karshapanas." That person gave sixty Karshapanas, and also let others take them away at the same price. Later, the tired people went for alms.
