Now, if one forces gold and silver upon those who are coercive, foolish, deaf, or mute, it will constitute a fault. However, there are instances where accepting gold and silver does not constitute a fault, which is when there is no intention to possess it for oneself, but rather the thought is to give it to others, or the thought is to seek other suitable items because it is not appropriate. The origin of the prohibition against using signs as a means of trade is that the Blessed One was residing in Shravasti. At that time, a merchant from the north was prophesied by naked ascetics, and thinking that this was the monastic community of hearers he had heard of before, the merchant gave them northern fruits and excellent Laba. Their friends sent these to Jetavana, and Upali was preaching at the gate of Jetavana, and (the monks) exchanged my inferior Laba for the good one. Afterward, the friends of the naked ascetics did not allow them to stay, scolded them loudly, and made them take it back. When they were not given it, they prayed to the Buddha. If they were not given it, they would vomit blood and die, so they were ordered to return it, and they cleaned the house and returned it. In this way, although the exchange of good and bad items using signs occurred, no precepts were established. Later, in Shravasti, the six groups of monks used various signs to trade and profiteer, lend at high interest rates, borrow and lend, seek surplus value, and exchange forged and un forged gold and silver to profiteer. They lent two dou of new grain for three, or one dou for two, exchanged conch shells for pearls, and exchanged pearls for precious gems to seek surplus value. In this way, the heretics ridiculed and insulted them, and the monks reported it to the Buddha. From now on, it is forbidden to use various signs to trade, and it is not allowed to exchange good and bad items, and precepts have been established. Again, "which monk" refers to the six groups of monks, and also refers to others similar to them. "Various" refers to many kinds. "Using signs" refers to profiteering, lending at high interest rates, borrowing and lending, and seeking surplus value. Abandoning the downfall means abandoning the object and confessing the downfall. A monk, regarding gold and silver, or any item sold locally, as well as interest and loans on wheat and rice.

At that time, it becomes an offense. If the accumulated property falls into the hands of a creditor, it constitutes a Nissaggiya Pacittiya offense. There is no offense in giving for the sake of the Three Jewels, or to pay off debts, or to give to others. Passing various goods from one to another through messengers, letters, gestures, and accumulating them constitutes an offense. If one is mentally disturbed, afflicted by illness, talkative, deaf, mute, or residing in another place, accumulating remaining goods together constitutes an offense. If one perceives a person as a person, it constitutes a Nissaggiya offense. If one perceives a person as a non-person, it constitutes an offense. The same applies to non-humans. Even if a fully ordained or not fully ordained person gives away goods, it constitutes an offense. There are also cases where accumulating various goods does not constitute an offense, such as when exchanging them for items of equal value. Just as a Bhikshu gives the precepts that entail forfeiture, so does a Bhikshuni. The same applies to Bhikshunis and male and female novices. In this training, apply buying and selling in the same way. The reason for not allowing buying and selling is that the Blessed One was residing in Jeta's Grove in Shravasti. At that time, the group of six monks were accumulating goods without prior designation and were taking both material and cash interest. Since it was not allowed, they engaged in buying and selling. They sold goods below their value and accumulated them. How did they buy and sell? They bought and stored when the price was low, and sold when the price was high. They bought and stored in good harvest years, and sold in bad harvest years when the price was high. Because they engaged in various kinds of buying and selling, the heretics ridiculed and reviled them, saying, "What is the difference between these Shakyaputra monks who are dissatisfied and do not know contentment and ordinary householders? What is the difference in their thoughts?" The monks heard these unpleasant words. The Buddha asked the group of six monks if they had really done this, and they replied that they had. The Buddha rebuked them, saying that this was not the conduct of a renunciate and was unreasonable. Therefore, he forbade buying and selling and established the training. The term "monk" refers to the group of six monks and others like them. There are many kinds of situations.
