Its height is less than half a cubit and a span. To sew in order to make the color not ugly is to counteract attachment to beauty and to make it firm. Not sewing is called not joining. Not sewing in order to make the color not ugly will result in a relinquishment offense, meaning that after abandoning the item, one must confess the offense. If a new mat is not sewn with an old one, all relinquishment offenses will be committed. If an old mat is torn and cannot be sewn, there is no fault in not sewing it. If one reduces the Tathagata's one finger or half a finger to sew, one will commit a relinquishment offense. Giving to others and having laypeople do it will result in an offense of wrong action. Reducing or not reducing unsuitable thread and wool: Sewing will result in an offense of wrong action. Reducing the Tathagata's one finger through letters and gestures, and having someone do it will result in an offense of wrong action. The origin of carrying wool on the road is that the Buddha Bhagavan was residing in Shravasti. At that time, the Six Groups of Bhikshus discussed: The Bhikshus with black bowls smear their feet with monkey oil, and they can obtain offerings when they come and go, and many people are happy. We are like frogs in a well, and we don't get offerings wherever we go, and the offerings are also few. In order to obtain offerings, let the wise Acharya stay in the monastery to guard it, and the five of us will go to Nepal to obtain offerings. So they went to Nepal together with the merchants who were going to other places. When they returned, they walked together, and the merchants' carts filled with wool broke, and the wool was thrown on the road. The Six Groups of Bhikshus picked up the wool, four people carried a bundle of wool each, and one person carried the belongings of the four people. The merchants went ahead on the small road. The monks and villagers of the mountain cliffs saw it and said: The wool army is coming. The villagers of the mountain cliffs all fled. The heretics and the wool owners ridiculed the monks carrying things, and did not believe, and came to Shravasti, and when they put the heavy goods on the ground, a loud noise was made. The monks did not believe and ridiculed, and this matter was reported to the Buddha.

Then the group of six monks, if asked: Is it true that you have done such an unseemly thing? They would answer: It is true, monks. Then they were reprimanded: This is not in accordance with the conduct of a Shramana, it is not reasonable. Therefore, monks are not allowed to carry wool on the road, and a precept of learning was established. A monk refers to the group of six, and others similar to them. Walking on the road refers to the road to death, or the road that many people travel. To obtain means to obtain from others. Wool refers to hair. If a monk wants, it means if it is needed. To take means it should be taken. After taking it, carry it yourself within a range of three yojanas, which means it should not exceed three yojanas. No one else carries it means there is no one authorized or a servant. Exceeding this range means exceeding it. Abandonment and expiation means abandoning the object and confessing the transgression. If a monk carries wool and walks on the road to a monastery, if he travels half a yojana, or from one village to another, he will commit a misdeed each time. If he travels one yojana, he will commit an offense of abandonment and expiation. There is no transgression in carrying materials for hats, shoes, and whips. There are also cases where carrying sheep's wool beyond three yojanas does not result in transgression: entrusting it to someone, or sending a letter, or using gestures, or passing it on one by one, or entrusting it to a madman, a mentally disturbed person, a person afflicted with illness, a fool, a mute, a deaf person, or a blind person; in all these cases, a misdeed will be committed. The origin of the story about entrusting the carrying of wool, which was later disallowed, is as follows: The Blessed One was residing in Shravasti. At that time, the group of six monks obtained wool from a wool-producing area. Previously, it was divided into five shares, but later, wanting to take advantage, they deceitfully divided it into six shares. Afterward, a certain monk thought: If I entrust this share of wool to a layperson, they might steal it because they have no discipline; if I entrust it to the seventeen nuns, they might use it to exchange for food; it would be better to entrust it to Gotami, the mother of all beings, who is well-versed in the Vinaya and has attendants. So, the monk went to Gotami.
