If someone commits a transgression and does not rectify it according to the Dharma, and some friends see that this person has committed a transgression, those friends who wish to help him urge him to confess his transgression. If the person who has committed the transgression says in return, "Who would commit a transgression again? I have not seen a transgression. If you commit a transgression, confess it to others. Whoever sees (me committing a transgression) should confess the transgression according to the Dharma." Venerable ones, whether it is good or bad, do not mention anything to me. "Whether it is good" means do not urge me to do good. "Whether it is bad" means do not prevent me from doing evil. You who have gone forth from different castes and lineages are like leaves scattered and piled together by the wind. If you are like this, (and still) say, "Someone from our lineage has attained enlightenment," (you) are mocking those monks of little meaning. If (monks) belonging to the Sugata's Sutra Pitaka admonish them, they will report, "They do not listen to instruction." The Buddha declared: To monks, those who have faith and others similar to them, should be admonished with precepts belonging to the Vinaya Pitaka. These are the root words. If it is still not possible to confess the transgression, then with supplication and four karmas, admonish them twice or three times. If after admonishing them twice or three times, they still do not confess, they will commit one offense of wrong-doing, three offenses of sanghavasesa, and become a remnant of the Sangha. These are the training rules established in the Vinaya Pitaka. "Some monks" refers to those who have faith and others similar to them. "The nature of being displeasing" refers to liking to be agreeable, reasonable, and good, but not listening to advice, and holding wrong views. This is what is meant by being displeasing. "Belonging to the Dharma" refers to the range from the four parajikas to the seven ways of settling disputes, and applies to the five categories of transgressions. "Belonging to the Sugata's Sutra Pitaka" refers to the Sutra Pitaka or the Abhidharma. "Whether it is good" refers to what is beneficial. "Monks" refers to those who have entered this Dharma. "In accordance with the Dharma" refers to the Sutra Pitaka and the Mother Tantras. "In accordance with the Vinaya" refers to the Vinaya Pitaka itself. "Admonishing" refers to admonishing according to the Dharma and the Vinaya. "Is it enough that you admonish me?" refers to abiding in displeasure. Ultimately.
