Combining as one, severing life, recognizing as a human, upholding the precepts, abandoning the precepts. Among these, the origin of killing is located on the banks of the Joyful River in the land of Vriji. The individuals are many monks who meditate on impurity. The object is killing. The affliction is intolerance. The sign is defeat. For beginners, those with disturbed minds, those afflicted by illness, and the insane, there is no downfall. The third defeat is the unforgettable word. Among these, the origin of falsely claiming to have attained superior human qualities is that the Blessed One was residing in Vaishali (Guangyan City), north of the village of Odi, at a place called the Shava Tree. In that year, there was a famine, and everyone suffered. Many people died, and food was extremely scarce, to the point where even parents would not give food to their own children. The Blessed One said to the monks who had ordained from five hundred fishermen, "Because food is so scarce, you should also go to Vaishali and the villages of Vriji to observe the summer retreat, and I will also go to the village of Odi with the attendant monk Ananda. If we do not do so, it will be difficult to obtain alms." They replied, "Yes, Venerable One." From then on, they individually approached virtuous friends in Vaishali and settled down, saying to each other, "The Blessed One said that staying here is comfortable, but we have no relatives here. Our relatives are in the fishing village. Let's go there to see our relatives, and staying there will be comfortable." So they went there and settled down for the summer retreat. They discussed, "We have little learning, so none of us can teach the Dharma. When our relatives come, let's praise each other's qualities." When they came, (they said,) "Oh, you have gained great merit by having the Sangha reside in this village for the summer retreat. This monk has attained the perception of impermanence. This one is the first dhyana practitioner. This one is an Arhat." In this way, they each proclaimed their qualities. Those people asked, "Have you attained the fruits of the noble qualities?"

Worldly people are fond of merit, and those people meticulously offer alms from their respective sons' mouths. Then, after three months of summer had passed, the Dharma nature of the Blessed One was such that the Sangha of Hearers had two great assemblies: one was when they gathered on the fifteenth of the middle summer month, received instructions, and entered into discipline; the other was when they assembled on the fifteenth of the middle autumn month when they emerged from discipline. The other monks also prostrated to the Blessed One and went in the direction where the Blessed One was staying in the city of Radiance. Ananda saw them coming, greeted them, and asked: "Have you come in peace, long-lived ones? Have you not been busy with begging for alms?" As he greeted them, those who were very thin and weak came and complained: "We lived comfortably in the country of Brijina during the summer, but we are always busy begging for alms." Then five hundred monks also came. Similarly, Ananda greeted and asked them, and those who were very strong and happy came and said to Ananda: "We lived very comfortably in the village of the fishermen, and we have never been busy begging for alms." When food is scarce like this, why were you not involved? Those people said: "We spoke of merit." Did you speak truthfully or falsely? "We spoke falsely." He said: "Are you able to lie for a little food?" Those people said: "Whether we are able to or not, we spoke." Then, the monks with few desires rebuked them, saying: "For a little wealth, there is no Dharma superior to that of humans, and if there is not, why do you speak?" Thus rebuking and making unpleasant noises, it reached the ears of the Blessed One, and he established the precepts of learning in the Vinaya. Having established this, later there were many monks, and in monasteries and forests and remote monasteries, they diligently practiced yoga, not engaging in desire and hatred, relying on some signs of tranquility from the worldly path, and dwelling there, they said to each other: "Long-lived ones, our birth is exhausted, the pure conduct"
