It is not allowed to take what is not given. If the thought of stealing arises, it becomes a grave offense. Stealing for the purpose of giving to others, and stealing the property of non-humans, are grave offenses. Stealing the ornaments near a stupa without a guardian is a grave offense. Stealing the relics and scriptures of the Tathagata (Sanskrit Devanagari: तथागत, Sanskrit Romanization: tathāgata, Chinese literal meaning: Thus Come One), if the value is sufficient, results in expulsion. Stealing the property of the Sangha of the four directions, and stealing the property of many people, are grave offenses. Stealing five mashakas worth of property from each of them results in expulsion. Stealing what was previously offered results in expulsion. Stealing large utensils does not result in expulsion. Stealing what is placed in a dwelling without separating it from the ground. Saying that one has the right to property that one does not have the right to is knowingly telling a lie, which leads to downfall. If there is a thought of stealing, it is a grave offense. If the property is established, it results in expulsion. Other offenses are combined as appropriate, as they appear in the Vinaya Vibhanga. The thought of a wealthy monk.

The monks, diligently meditating on impurity, felt disgusted, ashamed, and slothful towards this pus-filled body, and condemned it in various ways, even stabbing their own bodies with swords. Some took poison, some were infested with worms, and some jumped off cliffs. On top of killing each other, they went to the abode of the heretical practitioners, the deer-staff holders, the deer-guarding ascetics, and said, 'O beautiful sirs, come and kill me, and the robes and begging bowl will also be yours.' They sought to be killed by others, so the deer-staff holder also killed that monk, tucked the bloody sword under his armpit, and took it to the bank of the Delightful River to wash off the blood and sit down. Then, a god of the demon race spoke from the sky to the deer-staff holder, the ascetic guardian, saying, 'Well done, beautiful sir, you have accumulated much merit! You have killed the meritorious ascetic who should not have been killed, liberated those who should not have been liberated, pulled out those who should not have been pulled out, and especially their begging bowls and robes will also be yours.' Having heard these words, that person became even more inclined to look to evil in the future, and he said triumphantly, 'I have happily accumulated much merit! All who have not attained nirvana will attain nirvana, and all the robes and so on will flourish.' He became ecstatic, tucked the sword under his armpit, and went from one park to another, from one temple to another, from one small house to another, wandering everywhere. He killed every monk he encountered, saying, 'All who have not attained nirvana will attain nirvana.' At that time, a monk, weary of the impurity of the body, was meditating, and he got up from his small house and came out to the guardian monk, saying, 'Beautiful sir, please kill me, please liberate me!' And so that person killed him. In this way, from two to three, up to sixty, he killed. At that time, the Blessed One, on the fifteenth day of the Uposatha, was seated on the seat prepared in front of the assembly of the Shravaka monks. He looked at the surrounding monks with the manner of an elephant king looking back.

He saw that the assembly of listeners had become greatly reduced, diminished, and thinned out compared to before. The Blessed One said: Ananda, what cause, what reason is it that the monks have become so few? The venerable one replied: Blessed One, once the Blessed One spoke to the monks about impurity, saying that diligently meditating on and cultivating impurity would result in great fruit and great merit. Therefore, the monks, having diligently practiced impurity, became disgusted and disheartened with this festering body, and the monks killed themselves or entrusted hunters with clubs to kill them, so they have become few. The Blessed One said: Ananda, do monks also kill monks? The venerable one replied: They killed themselves. If that is so, that is not the practice of a renunciate. It is not in accordance with, not in accordance with the Dharma. That is not the practice of one who has gone forth. The Blessed One reproached them in many ways. Therefore, monks, because of that fault and that basis, because that happened, having considered the ten benefits, a training precept was established, namely, "Again, whichever monk," and so forth, are the root words. Furthermore, a monk is one who possesses the nature of a monk, that is, one who has received full ordination through the act of requesting and petitioning. A human being is one who possesses the six faculties, namely, the faculties of the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. One who possesses these six faculties is called a human being. To be formed as a human being means to have obtained three faculties in the mother's womb, namely, the faculty of the body, the faculty of the mind, and the faculty of feeling. Intentionally means to examine and investigate with the mind. A hand weapon means to strike and beat with one's own hand. To cut off life means that he is separated from life. To give a weapon means a sword or a knife or a razor. Formerly, two monks were dwelling together, and one of the monks thought, "I will kill myself." So he borrowed a knife from his fellow monk, entered his own dwelling, closed the door, sat cross-legged in the dwelling, and cut off his own life-gate with the knife, and passed away holding the knife. Therefore, do not give a weapon.
