Ground. The command was given: There is no fault in Maudgalyayana's son thinking in this way. The basis of the story is that the Blessed One was dwelling in the Bamboo Grove at Rajagrha. At that time, King Bimbisara always went to pay homage at the feet of the Blessed One and the elder monks. The Blessed One taught the Dharma to the king, praised him, and made him very happy. Then the king went to the venerable Srakshana's son and said, "O noble one, I will offer five hundred servants to build a house with a cloth covering." Srakshana's son said, "May the great king be free from illness," and accepted it for the sake of the Sangha. Then, at another time, in the last month of autumn, a heretic stole the house of the monks' servants. The venerable Srakshana's son manifested his miraculous power and surrounded the entire city with an iron fence. The heretics thought, "Some great magician is playing a joke," and abandoned all their possessions and fled. The group of six monks said that this was a transgression and performed the act of expulsion. After reporting this, the command was given: "If I did not think of the servants, the servants would also suffer from the loss of their possessions. The unbelievers find an opportunity, and the believers change. If one does not protect what others have given, then no one will think of giving to the Shakyaputra monks in the future, so I did not manifest miraculous powers." After making this request, the command was given: "There is no fault in thinking in this way." What kind of fault is it? If a monk dies without giving a share or boat fare, he will be defeated. For the sake of the Three Jewels and parents, teach the Dharma and give it to them. If you do not give it, give a share and boat fare. If a monk steals or causes others to steal another person's property or belongings, or causes them to be stolen through a messenger, it is also acceptable. Stealing another person's belongings, such as jewels, armlets, bracelets, semotas, necklaces, pearls, gold, silver, etc., and preparing to steal them, getting up from the seat, putting on the lower garment, and leaving, before touching them, one commits a minor offense. Touching them is a major offense. Taking them from the place, if the value is sufficient, one is defeated. Taking another's belongings with mantras or medicine.

If taken, it becomes a defeat. Stealing ownerless things incurs a gross offense. Stealing a boat, during the time it appears to be a boat, incurs a gross offense. If it does not appear, it becomes a defeat. There are three kinds of things: things of the field, things of the house, and things of trade. If stealing is related to these things, it must be thrown outside the boundary, or surrounded by a fence. Throwing it outside the boundary means suing to the local official, or the judge, or the king. If the monk has no power and wins the case, it becomes a defeat. Surrounding it means the fields are connected, or surrounded by a fence. If a monk steals two-legged, four-legged, many-legged, or legless creatures, and the value is sufficient, it becomes a defeat. Four-legged creatures are livestock such as horses. If they are separated from the herd and become one's own property, it becomes a defeat. Two-legged creatures are people and birds. There are three ways to steal people: time, agreement, and signs. If one knows through these three ways and it becomes one's own property, it becomes a defeat. If a monk steals something of no value, it becomes a defeat. The value is very large, meaning it has no value. Stealing something of small value, if one has taken the vows of a monk, one prepares to steal. If one has not taken the vows, stealing incurs a gross offense. If a monk takes something not given and changes its name, it becomes a defeat. There are six kinds of stealing: deceptive stealing, forceful stealing, stealing by not returning what was borrowed, stealing by not returning what was entrusted, stealing empty-handed, and stealing Dharma. Among these six kinds of stealing, except for stealing Dharma, the rest become defeats. If many people steal one item of property, it incurs a gross offense. However, if each person needs it separately, and each time they obtain property worth five mashakas, it becomes a defeat. Saying that one commits a defeat with five mashakas, there are also cases where one commits a defeat with three mashakas. There are also cases where stealing five mashakas does not result in a defeat, if one steals one, two, or three at a time, not reaching five. Just as one commits a defeat with five mashakas in Jambudvipa, it is the same in Aparagodaniya in the west and Purvavideha in the east. In Uttara
