This is taught by taking the example of taming a wild horse. Just as a wild, untamed horse should not be approached and driven in the wrong way, but rather relying on and seeking the right method, or like whipping it. Similarly, the mind, which is like a wild horse, is also greatly influenced by afflictions, indulging in the qualities of the five desires, and is difficult to turn back. Therefore, just as taming a wild, untamed horse should not be done in the wrong way, but rather relying on the reins to control and guide it. Similarly, the mind, which is like a wild horse, is also easily distracted by the objects of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, indulging in wandering. That which prevents and tames this mind is the Pratimoksha vows. Therefore, the Pratimoksha vows are like reins. The mention of "mind" here is to specifically point out and refute the view of "self" held by non-Buddhists. Although the mind is influenced by afflictions and creates negative actions, there is no so-called "self" that exists, so what needs to be tamed is only the mind. This shows that all afflictions are to be purified and increased. The eternal and unchanging "self" believed by non-Buddhists, its nature is eternal and unchanging, therefore there are neither afflictions nor liberation, just like space. Therefore, do not cling to the view of "self." The so-called "sharp peg" refers to the act of making amends, repenting, confessing, and admitting. If one abides in the Pratimoksha vows, one can completely cut off the negative actions that may lead to falling into the three lower realms in the future, therefore it is called "negative actions." "Hundred whips" refers to those who transgress the Pratimoksha vows, who will feel regret and unease in this life due to various negative actions. These two are shown as being like an untamed person. The reason for using "untamed" to describe this is to warn those who have bad behavior and are unwilling to be tamed, to make them feel ashamed and awakened. The so-called "similar" means that it is similar to both noble ones and base ones. Although one has abandoned the asceticism that harms oneself, it is also in accordance with the merits of practice, so it is not completely indulgent. Although one has abandoned the pleasures of the senses, it is also similar to the behavior of base people, so it is not a complete abandonment. The verse "What is great" is to explain the benefits of correct understanding.

Therefore, the so-called greatness, although there are cases where those who have attained the fruit of liberation are called great, here it refers to those who abide in the training of discipline and desire to practice. That is, they can be turned back by mere verbal admonition. The so-called "mere words" means that there is no need to drive them away with violence such as stones, sticks, and fists, and they can be turned away from the side of afflictions by merely speaking. The so-called "boundary" refers to practice, because knowing the boundaries of practice and non-practice, what should be done and what should not be done, what is allowed and what is not allowed, it is called not exceeding the boundary of practice. Mentioning good horses and good people is a metaphor. Superior people and horses need to be driven with stones, sticks, and fists, so they are not good horses and good people. Because they can be turned back by mere words, they are like smart horses or people who don't know what's good for them, therefore they are good horses and good people. The so-called "liberated from the battlefield of afflictions" is like a person with skillful means who can reverse the battle situation and defeat the enemy. A wise person who abides in practice can win the battlefield of fighting with afflictions, thereby attaining the liberation of an Arhat. Due to the fault of incorrect clinging, it is said, "Who has no reins," and so on. The so-called "who has not" refers to non-Buddhists and those who indulge in sensual pleasures. Because these people do not have the reins of individual liberation, they will never attain Nirvana. Some say that not only non-Buddhists, but even those who enter Buddhism, if they commit the fault of precepts and indulge in sensual pleasures, then these people, like those who do not desire Nirvana, will never attain liberation. The so-called "they are defeated from the battlefield of afflictions," afflictions refer to greed, hatred, and ignorance, etc. To gather or assemble these together, using a common word, is called the battlefield. Because oneself is controlled by afflictions, and oneself is defeated by afflictions, it is called defeated from the battlefield of afflictions. For example, just like being repelled by the enemy's battlefield, so it is defeated from the battlefield. The so-called "without Dharani, they will wander around," refers to whose Dharani
