The so-called "few desires and few activities" refers to showing the cause of few desires. The so-called "few activities" refers to few things done by the body and few things said by the mouth. The so-called "few actions" refers to few existing affairs. Specifically, there is no farming in the fields, no profits in business, no worldly affairs to do, and no things sought by the mind. In this way, because there is nothing else to do, the first thing that should be done as soon as possible is the Uposatha. Therefore, it is not allowed not to participate. No matter what happens, even if you are busy, you are not allowed not to participate. You must participate. This is the Buddha's teaching. After teaching this way, some monks were hindered from approaching the blessings of the master, some did not receive blessings, and some were unable to concentrate on meditation because of fatigue from the road, so they rested in the ranks. Some sick monks went to the Uposatha place after washing, and some monks who died were also allowed to do so. The Buddha taught: Monks, for those who have such circumstances, give them faith and complete purity, and do not let the Sangha's Uposatha be hindered. Therefore, those with life, ask those who have not arrived whether they have faith and complete purity. After asking, you must also say it. This is explained from the perspective of allowing non-participation in nine situations. "Those with life" refers to the fact that in Rajagriha, monks called each other by their secular names, so lay people were dissatisfied. The Buddha taught: Call them "those with life" or "venerable ones," because the World Honored One is called by merits. "Those who have not arrived" refers to those who cannot go to the Uposatha place due to illness, etc., and those who live within the boundary. If the condition is serious and you cannot speak, you can express it with body movements. If you still cannot express it, tell the Sangha. Alternatively, the patient should be accepted into the Sangha. Asking whether you are completely pure is like asking whether you have faith. Before asking, the monk who offers faith, after doing the Uposatha, squats respectfully like elders and young people and says: I have completely purified the Dharma of obstacles and have faith in the Sangha's affairs.
