It is explained by a single verse. That is also believed in four ways. What are the four? Believing in the asceticism of the body, believing in the diligence of asceticism, believing in the fruit of asceticism, and believing in the person who teaches asceticism. So, how do those who practice and abide in bodily asceticism resemble? For example, jumping into water, the discipline of a cow, the discipline of a dog, standing in ashes for a lifetime and holding a wooden peg. How does one believe in it? It is said that if one performs such wrong asceticism of non-Buddhists, old karma will be reduced and exhausted by asceticism; new karma, because it has not been done or practiced, is like water plants, and in the next life, defilements will be exhausted. When karma is exhausted, suffering is exhausted; when suffering is exhausted, one is liberated and reaches the end. Thus, the teacher says, 'The ascetic is virtuous.' To counteract this, one should separate from the four views of wrong asceticism and rely on right asceticism. What are the four? Believing in the Four Noble Truths, the diligence of asceticism is to be diligent in the qualities of the Four Truths, and the fruit of asceticism is from entering the stream to the state of an Arhat, which is to act on the fruit of the Four Truths. One should believe in the teacher, the Tathagata Vipashyin Buddha, so it is said. Now, among all asceticism, patience with the Dharma is the most excellent. So, how is patience? Patience with the Dharma of the Four Noble Truths with the mind, and that itself is shown to be excellent. There are also three kinds of patience: patience without harm, patience without taking suffering to heart, and patience with certainty about the Dharma. Thus, among the three kinds of patience, patience with certainty about the Dharma is the most excellent. Thus, having truly known and examined the Four Noble Truths with the mind, patience with the mind focused on the Dharma of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness, by that alone, one will enter into Nirvana, therefore it is excellent, so it is taught. Does bodily asceticism lead to Nirvana? Because the Buddha did not say so, bodily asceticism is not the most excellent, because it is taught to be superior to it.
