When crossing and tilting the shoulders, the Six Groups taught the Dharma, and the established precepts were added like wearing a head covering. When wearing necklaces and hats, the Six Groups taught the Dharma, and Brahmins and householders ridiculed them, so they reported it. It was established as a precept that the Dharma should not be taught to those wearing necklaces and hats. Just like those wearing necklaces and hats, those wearing hair knots, garlands, and headbands, it was widely added until it was said that the Dharma should not be taught to these people. The reason for not teaching the Dharma to those riding elephants is that the Six Groups taught the Dharma to those riding elephants, and believing householders ridiculed them, saying, 'The Noble Ones, the Bhagavan practiced austerities for three countless kalpas and attained unsurpassed Bodhi. How can they teach the Dharma to such disrespectful and unoffering people?' Therefore, after reporting this, the Buddha taught, 'The Dharma should not be taught to those riding elephants.' Thus it was established. Just as it is not allowed to teach the Dharma to those riding elephants, similarly, the Dharma should not be taught to those riding horses, sitting in palanquins, sitting on vehicles, or wearing high boots, and this was also widely added. The reason for not teaching the Dharma to those holding sticks in their hands is that the Six Groups taught the Dharma to those holding sticks in their hands, and believing Brahmins and householders ridiculed them, saying, 'The Bhagavan practiced austerities for countless kalpas and attained unsurpassed Bodhi. How can the Noble Ones teach the Dharma to those who are unoffering and disrespectful?' Therefore, after reporting this, it was established that the Dharma should not be taught to those holding sticks in their hands. Just as it is not allowed to teach the Dharma to those holding sticks in their hands, similarly, the Dharma should not be taught to those holding umbrellas, holding weapons, holding swords, holding weapons in their hands, or wearing armor, and this was also widely added. The reason for not standing to urinate or defecate is that in Shravasti, Nanda urinated and defecated while standing. The Shravaka disciples of the Teacher are all people with a sense of shame. What are these Shravaka disciples who disregard shame and embarrassment? Brahmins and householders ridiculed them, so after reporting this

Sa. The training is established that one should not urinate or defecate while standing. The reason for 'one should not urinate or defecate in water' is that once in Kaushambi, Nanda, being fond of something, went to a laundryman and said, "Please wash my clothes." The laundryman said, "Noble one, you used to be our protector and guardian, but now you are not, so I will not wash them." Nanda thought, "I will make him unhappy," so he drank a purgative and poured the resulting excrement into the water. The laundryman got up early the next morning to wash the clothes, but smelled the excrement. He was very angry and wondered who had done it. Nanda came to that place again and asked, "Why do you look so upset?" The laundryman said, "Noble one, I don't know who has thrown excrement into the water I use for washing clothes." Nanda said, "I did it to make you unhappy." They argued, and the Buddha heard about it and established the training that one should not urinate or defecate in water. Just as one should not urinate or defecate in water, one should also not discard phlegm, mucus, vomit, or nasal discharge. The training is established in that way. The reason for 'one should not urinate or defecate in a place with green grass' is that while residing in Sravasti, Nanda went to a gardener and asked for flowers, but the gardener refused. Nanda thought, "I will make him unhappy," so he drank a purgative, filled a pot with the resulting excrement, took a broom, and splattered the entire garden with the excrement, making a mess. The smell of the filth attracted foxes, making the situation even worse. The next day, when it was time to sell the flowers, the gardener went to the garden and saw that it was a mess, and he was very upset. Nanda saw him and asked, "Why are you upset?" The gardener said, "The garden is full of excrement, and I don't know who did it." Nanda said, "I did it on purpose to make you unhappy." They argued again, and the Buddha heard about it and taught that one should not urinate or defecate in a place with green grass, and the training was established. Just as with urine and feces, one should also not discard phlegm, mucus, vomit, or nasal discharge. The training is established in that way. Harm has arisen.
