After reporting thus, the Buddha instructed: When pouring out the water used to wash the alms bowl, do not give away the residue by pouring it into the alms bowl; this should be taught. If you want to pour out the water in the alms bowl, you should recite the verses spoken by the Blessed One for washing the alms bowl three times before giving it away; thus, the precept was established. 'Do not place the alms bowl on ground without a foundation,' this occurred in Shravasti. A certain monk placed his alms bowl on ground without a foundation, and it was eaten by insects. After reporting this to the Buddha, the Buddha instructed: Do not place the alms bowl on ground without a foundation; thus, the precept was established. 'Do not place the alms bowl on a garbage heap,' this occurred when a certain monk placed his alms bowl on a garbage heap. After reporting this to the Buddha, the precept was established not to place the alms bowl on a garbage heap. 'Do not place the alms bowl on the edge of a cliff,' this occurred when monks placed their alms bowls on the edge of a cliff, fearing they would fall off. The Buddha instructed: Do not place it on the edge of a cliff; thus, the precept was established. 'Do not place the alms bowl on a slope,' this occurred when monks placed their alms bowls on a step. The Buddha instructed that this would become a fault, therefore the precept was established not to place the alms bowl on a step. 'Do not wash the alms bowl while standing,' this occurred in Shravasti. A certain monk was washing his alms bowl while standing, and other monks admonished him not to do so. What would happen if he did? They replied that the alms bowl would break. Because they could not bear the alms bowl falling and breaking, after reporting this to the Buddha, the Buddha instructed: Do not wash the alms bowl while standing; thus, the precept was established. 'Do not draw water with the alms bowl against the current of a strong river,' this occurred when monks drew water with their alms bowls against the current of a strong river, and the alms bowl was carried away by the water. After reporting this to the Buddha, the Buddha instructed: Do not draw water with the alms bowl against the current of the river; thus, the precept was established. 'Do not wash the alms bowl on a garbage heap or on a slope,' this, combined with the previous rule of 'do not place,' emphasizes the difference in washing. 'Do not preach the Dharma while standing when those who are not ill are sitting,' this occurred in Shravasti. The group of six monks preached the Dharma while standing when those who were not ill were sitting.

Those who preach the Dharma and the faithful Brahmins and householders ridiculed, saying: The Blessed One practiced austerities for countless three kalpas, perfected the six paramitas, and attained unsurpassed wisdom, but you do not respectfully serve and sit on the ground to preach the Dharma? Therefore, hearing these ridicules, it was prescribed: One should not sit and preach to those who are standing. It was also prescribed: One should not lie down and preach to those who are sitting. This is because the six groups of monks were lying down and preaching to those who were sitting, and the householders ridiculed them. After hearing these ridicules, it was prescribed: One should not lie down and preach to those who are sitting. It was also prescribed: One should not sit on a low seat and preach to those who are sitting on a high seat. This is because the six groups of monks were sitting on low seats and preaching to those who were sitting on high seats, and the householders ridiculed them. After hearing these ridicules, it was prescribed: One should not sit on a low seat and preach to those who are sitting on a high seat. It was also prescribed: One should not walk behind and preach to those who are walking in front. This is because the six groups of monks, in the sangha, were preaching to those who were walking in front, before they had arrived at the back, and the householders ridiculed them. After hearing these ridicules, it was prescribed: One should not walk behind and preach to those who are walking in front. It was also prescribed: One should not preach on the side of the road to those who are walking on the road. This is because the six groups of monks were walking on the side of the road and preaching to those who were walking on the road, and the householders ridiculed them. After hearing these ridicules, it was prescribed: One should not preach on the side of the road to those who are walking on the road. It was also prescribed: One should not preach to those whose heads are covered. This is because the six groups of monks were preaching to those whose heads were covered, and the Brahmins and householders ridiculed them, saying: The Blessed One practiced austerities for countless three kalpas, perfected the six paramitas with hundreds of thousands of austerities, and attained unsurpassed Bodhi, but these people are preaching to those who are not respectful. After hearing these ridicules, it was prescribed: One should not preach to those whose heads are covered. Just as preaching to those whose heads are covered, so too to those who are turbaned, those who are draped in clothes, and those whose clothes are on their shoulders.
