After this matter was reported, the Buddha declared: "One should not shake the alms bowl," thus establishing a precept for training in the Vinaya. "One should train not to shake the hands" means that when the group of six monks were eating alms in a village, they would shake their hands, and drops of water from their hands would hit other monks, who were then ridiculed. After this was reported, the Buddha declared: "One should not shake one's hands while eating food," thus establishing a precept for training. "One should not splash the alms bowl" means that near the group of six monks, there was an ascetic wearing tattered clothes and sitting there. The group of six monks said, "Friend, we regret that we have not obtained such tattered clothes like this poor ascetic's." In order to displease him, they used the water for washing the alms bowl to make his Dharma garment unclean. Later, after this was reported due to ridicule, the Buddha declared: "One should not splash the alms bowl," thus establishing a precept for training. "One should not eat food after shaping it like a stupa" means that in Shravasti, there was a householder who did not like naked ascetics. Later, he developed faith in the Buddha and invited the Sangha. When he distributed flour, the group of six monks kneaded the flour into the shape of a stupa and placed it there. Later, when he distributed radishes, they carved out the radishes and made them look like central pillars. Then, when he distributed turnips, they made them look like umbrellas on top of the radishes and ridiculed, saying, "Friend, this is a stupa that leads to the lower realms." Then they broke it apart and ate it, ridiculing as they ate, "We are breaking apart the stupa that leads to the lower realms." When the householder heard this, he said, "Venerables, if you have already turned away from such sinful views, has your remorse not yet been cleansed?" They said nothing and just sat there. After this matter was reported, the Buddha declared: "One should not eat alms after shaping it like a stupa," thus establishing a precept for training in the Vinaya. "One should not look at the alms bowl of a monk sitting nearby with the intention of ridicule" means that when the group of six monks were eating alms in a village, they saw a monk eating a lot, and the group of six monks ridiculed him, saying, "Friend, look at this old man, he is eating so much."

Having heard the evil sounds, he then issued a decree. Do not be contemptuous, do not look at the alms bowl, thus establishing the precepts. Hands stained with food should not hold water vessels. The reason for this is that when the six groups of monks were eating, their hands were stained with food and they held water vessels. Believers, donors, and Brahmins all felt disgusted, saying that the Shakya monks were unclean. Having heard this, he then issued a decree. Hands stained with food should not hold water vessels, thus establishing the precepts. In front of the seat of a monk, do not sprinkle water stained with food. The reason for this is that when the six groups of monks were begging for food in a village, they saw a monk wearing patched clothes sitting in front of the seat. The six groups of monks were stingy and thought, "May we not see those wearing old clothes in our dreams." They used water stained with food to perform unclean acts. Having heard this, he then issued a decree. In front of the seat of a monk, do not sprinkle water stained with food, thus establishing the precepts. Without the permission of the donor, do not sprinkle water stained with food in a layman's house. The reason for this is that in the White Elephant village, Prince Jue Wu invited the Sangha for a meal. After the meal, the six groups of monks poured the water from their alms bowls there. The people who provided the meal were disgusted, saying that they were unclean and that the house painted with one hundred and one colors was polluted. Having heard this, he then issued a decree. Do not sprinkle water stained with food in a layman's house, thus establishing the precepts. Without permission means that if a layman says, "You can pour it here," then there is no fault. Do not pour leftover food into the alms bowl. The reason for this is that in Shravasti, the son of a Brahmin was seriously ill, so he asked a doctor. The Brahmin was also a believer, and the doctor told him, "Bathe with the water used to wash the alms bowl." The Brahmin then went to the six groups of monks and asked for the water used to wash the alms bowl. At that time, the six groups of monks were holding a vessel and came in, put rice, flour, yogurt, meat and other leftovers mixed with water into the alms bowl, poured it out, and gave it to the Brahmin. Even if the son of a saint dies, one should not give such filthy things.
