Once, someone invited the Buddha and his retinue for a meal. When the patron was distributing the food, he said, "Venerable ones, please enjoy the delicious food, but do not take too much flour." But the group of six monks took a lot of flour. When distributing food to the elders, there was an old monk sitting below the group of six. When (the patron) gave food to the elders first, the group of six monks filled the bowl with rice wine. When the patron was distributing the food, (the rice wine) was given to the old monk, and because the bowl was too heavy, it fell to the ground. The patron said, "Venerable one, why did you take so much flour? I didn't take it." "Oh, who took it?" They were vague like that. The group of six monks said, "Patron, haven't you heard? Just like the kings in Soya who rain down treasures for seven days, rice wine also rained down on that old monk." They all sat there speechless. This matter was spread, and therefore the rule was made that "the bowl should be checked." The rule was made that "one should not raise the bowl before the food arrives," because when the group of six monks were begging for alms, they would raise the bowl and sit down before the food was given. The faithful Brahmins and patrons ridiculed them, saying, "Why do you raise the bowl before the food is given?" This matter was spread, and therefore the precept was made that "one should not raise the bowl before the food arrives." Furthermore, the rule was made that "one should not cover the dishes with rice," because in a situation where it was not heard, a patron invited the Blessed One and the Sangha of monks for a meal. The patron prepared a lot of rice and little dishes. The group of six monks covered the dishes with rice. The patron saw the rice and asked, "Are there any dishes?" (The group of six monks) said, "Look at that patron." Then they also gave dishes. The monks entered the temple and said, "That patron's rice is good, but there are few dishes." When they complained like that, the group of six monks said, "We got a lot because we covered the dishes with rice." The monks ridiculed this matter, and therefore the precept was made that "one should not cover the dishes with rice."

The matter of "not covering rice with vegetables" is like this: When in Shravasti, a householder invited the Buddha and the Sangha for a meal. At that time, the householder made a lot of vegetables and little rice, so the group of six monks covered the rice with vegetables, and the householder did not see the rice, so he said, "Venerable ones, is there no rice?" Then (the monks) said, "Look at that householder." The householder gave more rice. Those monks went to the temple again and said, "That householder made a lot of vegetables and little rice." The group of six monks said, "We got a lot of rice." "Is that okay?" So they reported to the Buddha and established the precept of "not covering rice with vegetables." The matter of "eating food properly" is like this: The group of six monks scooped up food with spoons and ate it, and those venerable ones did it like small children or people who lived by appearances. "Don't do that!" The householders ridiculed them, so they reported to the Buddha and established the precept of "eating food properly." The matter of "not eating too small mouthfuls" is like this: When the group of six monks ate in the village, they ate with small mouthfuls, and the devout householders ridiculed them, saying, "Small children and noble brides eat like that." So they reported to the Buddha and established the precept of "not eating too small mouthfuls, but eating mouthfuls of moderate size." The matter of "not eating too large mouthfuls" is like this: When the group of six monks ate in the village, they ate with very large mouthfuls, and the householders ridiculed them, saying, "Venerable ones, hungry people and beggars eat like that, don't eat like that!" So they reported to the Buddha and established the precept of "not eating too large mouthfuls, nor eating too small mouthfuls, but eating mouthfuls of moderate size." The matter of "not opening the mouth to measure the food" is like this: When in Shravasti, a householder invited the Buddha and the Sangha for a meal. An old man was sitting below the group of six monks, and he opened his mouth and looked at the old man's phlegm, and an attendant put a fly in his mouth and said, "Eat that first!" So they reported to the Buddha and established the precept of "not opening the mouth to measure the food." The matter of "not speaking with the mouth full of food" is like this: The group of six monks with their mouths full of food
