English
"Knowing with accompaniment" means knowing that there are thieves and deceitful people. "Knowing with fear" means knowing that there are lions and leopards. "Fearful and frightening" means being touched by flesh flies, long-beaked mosquitoes, wind, and snakes. Furthermore, "any bhikkhu" refers to the group of six bhikkhus, and others similar to them. "Unexamined woodland" refers to someone saying: A bhikkhu should be appointed to examine the woodland through the activities of requesting and petitioning. If the bhikkhu examining the woodland has examined it, there is no fault; if he has not examined it, then it should be known that there is a fault. "Outside the Saṃgha" means outside the monastery. "Food and seasonings" refer to the five kinds of food and the five kinds of seasonings. "Taken" means accepting what has been given. "Eaten" means swallowing into the throat. "That bhikkhu" means any bhikkhu. "To the bhikkhus" means any bhikkhu who is dwelling there. "Should be confessed individually" means should be confessed openly. "Becoming a place of reproach" means being unbefitting of one's caste and unbefitting of the rules. The offense is: If a bhikkhu, without examining the woodland, knowingly takes food and seasonings outside the Saṃgha, and then cooks or eats them, he should confess individually. If he doubts without examining, he should also confess individually. If he thinks he has not examined when he has examined, or if he doubts, he commits a minor offense. If the person examining the woodland dies or flees, there is no downfall. There are five ways of reciting the Prātimokṣa, of which the Prātimokṣa is the phrase of non-forgetfulness. Beginning with the fifth section of the Prātimokṣa, the venerable ones said: These many trainings, friends, occur during the recitation of the Prātimokṣa every half-month. "Many trainings" means that a bhikkhu should properly train, including minor disciplines and so forth. All minor offenses arising from all places of training should be regarded as included in this training, and because the number is not fixed, it is called "many trainings." A bhikkhu should not sing, dance, or play music, should not use percussion instruments, should not apply rouge, should not adorn the body with ornaments, should not trim hair or beards, and should not look at his face in a mirror, etc.
