Now, being equal in terms of livelihood and so on, and having the same activities, this is called harmonious bliss. Or, bliss is the cause of harmony, from nirvana downwards, obtaining the fruits of good rebirths and so on, for example, the power of the Tathagata appearing in the world, causing the noble Kaundinya and others to obtain the fruit of liberation. Or, the power of the Sangha's harmony, causing the practice of the three trainings and diligence, thus abandoning, eliminating, burning, or tormenting the dark afflictions, this is asceticism. Like this, the superior discipline and superior wisdom abide, abandoning the dark afflictions, this is bliss. This verse shows the cause of the appearance of the Three Jewels and the necessity of bliss. "The noble ones, seeing is bliss," this is among the seven ways, explaining that one should rely on a virtuous friend. Among them, there are two kinds of virtuous friends: the conventional virtuous friend and the ultimate virtuous friend. Among them, the term "noble" is used because they are far away from sinful dharmas and afflictive dharmas, therefore they are called noble. The excellent one is one who benefits others and has discipline, so it is said of the noble one. Seeing such an excellent person is bliss. Some say, what bliss is there in seeing? It should be understood by analogy, associating and living together is also bliss. Some say, for example, an untamed person, even if not seen, is said to be good, therefore seeing the noble ones gives rise to joy, so it is also said that seeing is bliss. Associating is bliss, like this, associating with a virtuous friend, being separated from non-virtuous dharmas and increasing virtuous dharmas, being liberated from sins, being empty and helping, therefore associating and living together with such a person, immediately bliss shines in the heart and there is no pain, the heart rejoices and trust arises, the place and merit ripen in bliss, therefore associating with a virtuous friend is bliss. "Children, not seeing is bliss," this shows abandoning non-virtuous friends. The term "children" refers to those who think badly and speak badly.

And, acting wickedly. If you do not associate with or befriend such people, you will always be happy. For example, just as one avoids something with fleas by an arm's length, something with horns by a shout, and something with fangs by a yojana, likewise, it is very happy to distance oneself from children who commit evil and become distant. Furthermore, mundane virtuous friends are also of two types: those who abide in the limb of calm abiding and those who abide in the limb of insight. Seeing one who possesses discipline is happiness. This means relying on those who abide in the limb of calm abiding, because a person who possesses discipline well guards against the faults of the body and the faults of speech, as well as faults of their own nature, and does not harm others, so seeing such a holy person is happiness. Why is that? For example, thieves say that even if they are not seen, it is easy to succeed. Therefore, seeing a monk who possesses discipline, one rejoices because of the trust that arises in one's own mind and in the minds of others. Much learning eliminates doubt, realizes the truth, and eliminates all kinds of doubts, so seeing one who is learned is happiness. This abides in the limb of insight. Now, in this case, one might say that there are no elements of calm abiding and insight within discipline. Although there is insight within calm abiding and calm abiding within insight, the distinction is made only because of the difference in the amount. Calm abiding is the discipline that pacifies distraction, and its nature is not being coarse or frivolous, and because the element of tranquility is greater, it is indicated by calm abiding. Much learning is the wisdom of hearing, and because the element of wisdom is greater, it is indicated by insight. Abiding in a limb means that calm abiding and insight have not yet reached ultimate perfection. Furthermore, for the ultimate virtuous friend, there are also those who abide at the edge of calm abiding and those who abide at the edge of insight. No longer liberated from existence, the word "no longer" is synonymous with "returning." Existence refers to the three realms. Therefore, because one is liberated from the afflictions of returning to existence, it is called no longer liberated from existence. Liberation refers to the afflictive bonds of taking the aggregates that are tainted.
