Separately invited means being invited separately. Even after four months, some monks would be invited individually. Repeatedly invited means that those monks were invited again and again. Constantly invited means that the patrons constantly invited and provided for those monks. 'That is the time' means the Dharma that corresponds to that. 'Falling' means falling into the three lower realms. 'Fault' means that if a monk is offered unappetizing food and he asks for appetizing food, then he commits the fault of asking. If he eats it, he will commit a transgression. If a monk is offered appetizing food and he asks for unappetizing food, that is a fault. If he eats it, there is no fault. If he is offered whatever he wants and then asks for it, there is no fault. When a monk advises another monk, saying, 'Study this precept,' and is told, 'Do not study this precept,' the story takes place in Rājagṛha. Previously, the Blessed One, for the Śrāvaka monks, fathers and mothers, in general, when establishing a place for studying the Vinaya, having gathered together, established a place for studying the Vinaya for the Sangha. For four months, they were invited as guests, but trembling was not allowed, because the two Sangha groups were slandering each other. When slandering this precept, the monks did not gather, and when going to advise, when advising the group of six, they would say, 'Fool, we will not learn from your words.' Then, when advising the group of twelve nuns, they also said, 'We will not learn.' When advising Skye-dgu'i bdag-mo Gautamī, she replied, 'I will respectfully accept the Blessed One's command with my head.' Having circled around to show the way, Ānanda asked, 'Advise?' He replied, 'If I advise, then I am a fool,' and then took on the responsibility. If asked what the fault is, the group of six and the group of twelve monks would say, 'Fool, we will not listen to your words to study,' and then they would refuse. Hearing the sound of those monks slandering, they reported it, and the group of six were rebuked by the command. They were not allowed to speak in that way, and then a place for studying the Vinaya was established. Again, 'monk' means the group of six, and others similar to them. 'Monks' means those who have entered this Dharma. 'Study this precept' means

Later, the Dharma that should be studied is to be taught accordingly. "Childish and unwise" means not clear. "Unwise" means not knowing the Sutras, Vinaya, and Matrikas. The fault is that when instructing to study this precept, they say that the child is unwise and unclear, and if they cannot be taught, then they will all fall. If one does not listen to the instruction to study with the Dharma that possesses Vinaya, one will fall. If one does not listen to the instruction with Sutras and Matrikas, it is a misdeed. A foolish and unwise child is without fault. The reason why monks are not allowed to quarrel is that it is said that when the group of six monks were sitting in a Sangha without saying a word, the group of seventeen monks flourished, some holding the Sutras, some holding the Vinaya, and some holding the Matrikas. They discussed among themselves that no one had harassed us as much as the group of six, and among them, Sudinna harassed us the most. They decided to perform the act of expelling Sudinna. Sudinna also listened secretly. When they were discussing in the room, Sudinna listened at the door; when they were discussing in the monastery, he listened at the window. When Sudinna heard their discussion, he said, "You people want to expel me, just like tying an elephant with a rope, which can kill the elephant, but a thin rope cannot tie the elephant. If you let go, you let go, if you don't let go, I will be even more stubborn." They could not expel him and asked, "How did you hear our discussion?" Because of the ridicule of why monks should listen secretly, the Buddha rebuked and established the precept, not allowing eavesdropping. Again, "monk" refers to Sudinna, and also to others like him. "Monks" refers to those who have entered this Dharma. "Fighting, quarreling, and disagreeing" refers to standing on one's own side and the other's side separately. "Sitting and listening without saying a word" means listening secretly without speaking. "Listening to what they say and preparing to respond in that way" means thinking and preparing in advance. "That cause" means not other. Falling means falling into the three lower realms.
