The reason for not allowing ordination (for those under twenty) was in Shravasti. At that time, Maudgalyayana's son ordained and gave the full ordination to seventeen groups of people who were under twenty years old. Those people did not receive food at night, and they were cold and hungry, tormented by wind and mosquitoes, so they cried and made noise in the monastery, which was heard. The Blessed One asked, "Who are those?" It was answered, "The venerable Maudgalyayana's son gave the full ordination to seventeen groups of people under twenty years old, so the young children are crying because they cannot bear the cold and hunger." The Blessed One rebuked, "How can a monk give the vows of a monk to a person under twenty years old?" From then on, it was not allowed (to ordain those under twenty), and a precept was established to be learned in the Vinaya. A monk refers to Maudgalyayana's son, and others like him. Not yet twenty means not yet twenty years old. Full ordination means ordination through request and four karmas. That person will not become fully ordained, which refers to any status of a monk. Rebuking these monks means rebuking those who dwell here and give full ordination. If a monk thinks that a person under twenty is twenty years old, or has doubts, then each time he will commit a downfall. Ask if he is twenty years old or not. If he asks and the other says he is not twenty years old, but he still gives full ordination, then he will commit a downfall. For the Sangha, it will be a misdeed. From now on, after giving full ordination, if you remember that he is under twenty, count from the mother's womb. If it is still not enough, then expel him and then give full ordination again. If you do not do so, then that person becomes a thief-dweller, and he should not be allowed to live in the Sangha. If you think that twenty years old is almost full, then there is no fault. The reason for not allowing monks to dig the ground was in Shravasti. At that time, the six groups of monks dug the ground themselves and had others dig it. They dug ditches, which caused the heretics to mock, saying, "What is the difference between this and a householder?" After hearing this, the Blessed One rebuked them and established the precept of not allowing digging the ground to be learned in the Vinaya. A monk refers to the six groups of monks, and others like them.

Digging the earth is called doing it oneself. Having digging done is called entrusting it to others. There are two kinds of earth, namely, dug and undug. If a bhikshu digs dug earth, he will incur a downfall. Writing on the earth or digging on the earth, or taking from the earth, will incur a downfall. Driving a stake into the earth, and drawing a ditch, and digging the earth, and driving a stake into a wall, will incur a downfall. Drawing a picture on a wall, and earth that has fallen from a wall that has been gnawed, and taking out a pellet placed in mud, and digging gravelly earth, all of these will incur a minor offense each. A minor offense also for many sands. If a bhikshu who is working on the ground because of the arrival of a constellation ceremony, if there is no one to allow it, there is no offense in driving a stake more than four fingers into the ground. The origin of not allowing a bhikshu to stay longer than four months after being invited is that in the place of Kapilavastu, at that time Shakya Mingchen prepared food and bedding for four months for the Bhagavan and other Shravaka retinues, and invited them to offer and entertain them with food. The Six Groups of bhikshus, in order to exceed four months, devised a way to take turns being sick and taking turns caring for the sick. After four months were completed, they held a farewell banquet. After the Bhagavan and the bhikshus left, the Six Groups of bhikshus did not receive the care of the sick and said they wanted a share. The householders said, "Those people have all destroyed the sangha, and there is no reason for four months." The Six Groups of bhikshus became angry and said, "Is it enough that Shakya Mingchen only made a nominal invitation? If that is enough, then we can arrange it every day." So they forcibly demanded it, and the householders ridiculed and were unhappy. Therefore, the training rule was established that begging and not being allowed to stay for more than four months. Four months means not exceeding four months. Bhikshu refers to the Six Groups of bhikshus, and others similar to them. Invitation means inviting and calling. Please accept means promising for four months, please accept. Exceeding that time means exceeding four months.
