If put in, it becomes a downfall. If the item is not damaged, even if the downfall is confessed, it cannot be taken back from it. When restoring a downfall, if one does not ask whether the bhikkhu's item is damaged, one commits a minor offense. Its affliction is disbelief. When a bhikkhu makes a bed or small bed for the sangha, except for the legs entering the hole, it should be made to the size of eight fingers of the Sugata. If one uses it exceeding this size, one commits a downfall. When the Buddha was staying in Shravasti, a bhikkhu wandered to Shravasti, and when allocating bedding, he obtained an old bed with short legs in the gatehouse, and sat on it. After washing his feet in front, he sat down peacefully. After that, a bhikkhu walking on the road was very tired, hot, and thirsty, wanting to cool off, and after washing his feet, he lay down there, thinking: This will kill me. So he raised his head. The bhikkhu was immediately caught as soon as he fell into the ditch, and the time had passed. After that, the Buddha instructed to lengthen the bed legs and established the rule of the ladder. If the bed legs exceed the size, one commits a downfall. If it does not reach the size, one commits a minor offense. Its affliction is disbelief. Also, if a bhikkhu spreads or has someone spread cotton on a bed or small bed of the sangha, he commits a downfall after collecting it. When the Buddha was staying in Shravasti, there was a new bhikkhu named Gawo. One night, an old bhikkhu came to borrow a dwelling and moved the mattress. After a while, another old bhikkhu came. The bed on which Nyene Gawo himself slept was covered with cotton. After that, the bhikkhu asked: Whose is this? The man said: This is my cotton. Another bhikkhu said: Nyene Gawo is right, the bed belongs to the sangha, and the cotton belongs to Nyene Gawo. Nyene Gawo was angry and collected a large amount of cotton and hid it, scattering only a little on the bed. After that, the bhikkhu who came from noon slept on that bed in the darkness at night, and when he got up the next morning, his body was covered with cotton and turned gray. So the rule of the bhikkhu with few desires was established. Its affliction is disbelief. When a bhikkhu makes a cushion, it should be according to the size.

Do it. The size of the cushion there is as follows: the length is one span of the Sugata (the distance from the thumb to the middle finger when the palm is open). The width is one and a half spans. Measure the length with one fathom (the length of both arms stretched out to the left and right). If you use it exceeding this size, you will commit a downfall. When the Buddha was in Shravasti, he instructed to make cushions for the monks. Those monks would make the cushions too big and oversized in the future, so the monks with few desires rebuked them, and thus the precepts were established. The length of the cushion is set at one span. A monk was very tall, but the cushion was short, and the dirt from his lower body touched the seat of the Sangha, so the length was increased by one fathom, and the precepts were established. The length is five and a half cubits, and the width is two cubits and six fingers. If you make a cushion with rough cloth, you will commit a misdeed. The cushion should be made of three layers sewn together. If it does not reach the size, you will commit a misdeed. If a monk wants to make a cloth to cover a sore, he should make it according to the size. The size of the cloth to cover a sore there is as follows: the length is four spans of the Sugata, and the width is one span. If you make and hold it exceeding this size, you will commit a downfall. When the Buddha was in Shravasti, he instructed the monks to make cloths to cover sores. Those monks would make the cloths too big and oversized in the future, so the monks with few desires rebuked them, and thus the precepts were established. Exceeding the size will cause a downfall, and not exceeding the size will cause a misdeed. The size of the large summer cloth for monks is as follows: the length is six spans of the Sugata, and the width is one and a half spans and one third. If you use it exceeding this size, you will commit a downfall. When the Buddha was in Shravasti, he instructed to look for large summer cloths. Those monks would make the cloths too big and oversized in the future, so the monks with few desires rebuked them, and thus the precepts were established. Exceeding the size will cause a downfall, and not reaching the size will cause a misdeed. If you are worried about the Dharma robe getting wet, there is no fault. The affliction there is distrust. Also, should a monk make a Dharma robe of the same size as the Sugata's Dharma robe? If you make it exceeding the Sugata's Dharma robe, you will commit a downfall. The size of the Sugata's Dharma robe there is as follows: the length is ten spans of the Sugata, and the width is six spans. That is the size of the Sugata's Dharma robe. When the Buddha was in Shravasti, the monk Nanda told the craftsman the size of the Sugata's Dharma robe.
