It is difficult to find someone with merits, and it is pleasing to possess musical instruments and weapons. Regarding the circumstances under which it is permissible to take precious objects found within a monastery: In the past, when the Buddha was residing in Vaishali, a deer named Ridadshatru went to the Buddha. Upon reaching the gate of the monastery, it felt ashamed and tied the tree trunk with flowers, sitting there. A boy was assigned to guard it, and after he left to pick flowers, Ananda saw the decorations and, fearing they would be lost, hid them. Later, the laywoman Saga returned them. Whether inside or outside the monastery, if one finds precious objects or things belonging to precious objects within the boundary, one should take them and use them for the maintenance of the temple. Touching purified jewels results in a downfall, while touching unpurified ones results in a misdeed. Taking Buddha images containing relics results in a downfall, while taking those without relics results in a misdeed. Taking them with the recognition of the Teacher incurs no fault. "Bathe every half month," the Bhagavan taught. Violating this teaching, except when the time is right, results in a downfall. The right time is: the last two and a half months of spring, the first month of summer, and these three and a half months are the hottest seasons. The time for traveling, the time for wind, the time for rain, the time for hail, that is the time. When the Buddha was residing in the Bamboo Grove in Rajagriha, King Bimbisara had two hot water ponds. One for himself to bathe in, and one for his consorts and retinue to bathe in. The king thought: I should offer all necessities to the Buddha and his retinue, and I should also offer this hot water pond. The king thought: Let the noble ones bathe in the pond where I bathe. Afterwards, the group of six monks entered the king's bathhouse. When the king came to bathe, the group of six monks, in order to joke, were playing in the water. The king thought: They are making me wait, they are joking to make me wait, let them be splashed with water. So he splashed them with water. The king was slightly angry. It is prescribed: Bathing before every half month results in a downfall.

If one thinks that it is time to bathe, if one does not bathe in that way, one will commit a downfall. Bathing in water, if the area below the navel is submerged, one commits a misdeed. Exceeding this range, one commits a downfall. Bathing at an inappropriate time, from the beginning of the first month of summer to the end of the last month of summer, because it is the hottest time, one can bathe. When sick, it is permissible, from a minor cold upwards. When working, it is permissible from dusting, wiping, etc., upwards. When it is windy, it is permissible as long as the last dust is not blown away. When it rains, if two or three drops of rain fall on the body, if these situations occur, one can also bathe. In short: animal, regret, finger, top and together hating, hiding and without assurance, without root, without a man and a road traveler. Furthermore, if a monk intentionally thinks, killing beings that have entered the birthplace of animals, one commits a downfall. When the Buddha was staying in Shravasti, a monk named "Appearance" went wandering and arrived at a place where archery was being taught. Dissatisfied with the children shooting arrows, he frowned, picked up a bow and arrow, and shot a flying crow in the buttocks in the sky, then pulled it out with his mouth. Later that night, the children told the teacher about this, and the teacher instructed: Hang the crow's corpse on a long pole, and say, "The monk 'Appearance' comes to beg for alms every day, he did this." Then they followed him and said that the monk was killing living beings, so the monk "Appearance" was punished. If one intentionally thinks of killing an animal, even killing it by throwing tiles or rice grains, one will commit a downfall. If it is not killed, one commits a misdeed. Affliction is the lack of compassion. Furthermore, if any monk intentionally thinks, "No matter what, I must say these words to this monk," and because of this reason, if the monk develops regret, he commits a downfall. When the Buddha was staying in Shravasti, after Maudgalyayana's son had seventeen children ordained as monks, a monk named "Appearance" made these seventeen people work. They could not do it, and because of this resentment, he said, "You were ordained as monks before you were twenty years old, so you do not have the qualifications of a monk." Therefore, I developed regret and unhappiness.
