Having done many, or living together, or living together in conduct, or sleeping in one room, one will err in each case. If it is to avert illness or sin, then there is no fault. Furthermore, if any bhikshu says this, "As the Blessed One has said, desire is an obstruction. Even if one relies on those, it will not become an obstruction. Thus, I know the Dharma taught by the Blessed One." If he says this, the sangha should say to that novice, "Novice, how do you think that the Blessed One said that desire is an obstruction, and even if one relies on those, it will not become an obstruction? Do not say that, 'I understand the Dharma taught by the Blessed One.' Do not slander the Blessed One. Slandering the Blessed One will not be good. The Blessed One does not speak like that. Venerable novice, desire itself is an obstruction, as the Blessed One has said in many ways. If one relies on those, it will become an obstruction. Novice, abandon this sinful view of yours." Thus, admonish him. After the bhikshus have admonished that novice in this way, if he abandons that thing, then it is good. If he does not abandon it, in order to abandon that thing, he should be admonished and taught properly two or three times. After being admonished and taught properly two or three times, if he abandons that thing, then it is good. If he does not abandon it, the bhikshus should say to that novice, "From now on, novice, do not call the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, the teacher. And do not follow any brahmachari, wise person, or lama. Bhikshus and novices are allowed to sleep in the same room for two nights, but from now on, you do not have that right either. Foolish person, disappear from my sight, get out." Thus, admonish him. Furthermore, if a bhikshu, knowing that the novice has disappeared from sight, gives him lodging, or sleeps with him in the same house, he will err. When the Buddha was dwelling in Shravasti, he said to the bhikshu Nanda, the novice named Thorns and Offering.

Of the two, monks who have not renounced desire play and make noise, walk arrogantly, and nourish their bodies in this way. Afterwards, they confessed their downfalls, practiced diligently, and eventually became Arhats. Through supernatural powers, in the sky, those two desire-stained novices saw this and thought: In the past, we were also controlled by desire and did all kinds of play, just like this. Desire will not become an obstacle. Although they relied on the Buddha's words that "desire is an obstacle," they said that desire would not become an obstacle. After saying this, the Sangha admonished them three times. But they still did not listen, so they punished them with the punishment of being out of sight and placed them in a state of exclusion. The two of them wept and went to Nanda. They gave each other lodging and acted together. For a Bhikshu who has become like that, if he gives lodging, talks, or sleeps together, he will commit a downfall each time. There is no fault in preventing non-virtue and illness. If a Bhikshu obtains a new cloth, he should dye it into any of the three colors: blue, red, or dark blue. If a Bhikshu uses a cloth without dyeing it into any of the three colors: blue, red, or dark blue, he will commit a downfall. When the Buddha was staying in the Light Garden in Rajagriha (capital of the ancient Indian kingdom of Magadha around the 6th century BC, now Rajgir in Bihar), the musicians in that place relied on music for their livelihood, in order to offer to the Dragon Kings Joyful Mountain and Joyful Increase. When the Buddha was practicing the Bodhisattva path from the time he descended from the heavens to the time he attained enlightenment, a dance called Ke'ura was performed in front of many people, and the Six Groups of Bhikshus also took clothes and ornaments from the king's entourage. In a place where many people gathered, they played various kinds of music. Those who were skilled were like the dances and music of the gods, and many people also gathered there and were amazed. Afterwards, the Six Groups of Bhikshus went to the Light Garden and washed those clothes. They did not paint round patterns on their faces with paint. The previous musicians saw this and said: Our livelihood depends on musicians, please be patient, Holy Ones, and please do not do this again in the future. The Six Groups of Bhikshus said:
