Then it becomes a downfall. Furthermore, if a bhikṣu sleeps in the same room with someone who has not taken full ordination for more than two nights, it is a downfall. When the Buddha was residing in Śrāvastī, the monastic officers would set a time limit for donors and Brahmins. Later, in a room with a lamp burning, a bhikṣu and a householder were sleeping together. An elderly bhikṣu, due to old age and weakness, had lost his memory and dreamed of doing what he used to do with his wife. He then uttered some unpleasant words, which were heard by the householder. They then discussed, "If this old bhikṣu is like this, what will the young bhikṣus be like?" Therefore, the precept was established. After that, Nears Delight (Nye Dga' Bo), the śrāmaṇera Tserma Can, and a donor were sleeping together. Another bhikṣu said from outside the door, "Did I drink alcohol? Or did I eat garlic?" Those bhikṣus with few desires discussed it, and therefore the precept was established not to sleep with someone who has not taken full ordination. Later, the practitioner Rāhula did not get a place to stay and slept near the Buddha's footstool. The Buddha knew that he would be bitten by a venomous snake that night. Without waking him, the Buddha picked him up and placed him on his own bed. The next morning, the practitioner's parents said that a bhikṣu could sleep for up to two nights. Therefore, the precept was established. Later, Nears Delight slept with a bhikṣu for more than two nights, and those bhikṣus with few desires discussed it, and therefore the precept was established. Even if there is only one roof, there must not be only one outer door. Even if there is only one roof, but there are different doors, there is no fault. Even if there is no roof, one outer door is acceptable. Within one fathom behind the wall where the bhikṣu is sleeping is the boundary. When sleeping separately, within one fathom, a practitioner and a householder cannot sleep together. Furthermore, if a bhikṣu says, "I understand that those things that the Blessed One has said to be obstructive will not be obstructive even if practiced. I understand the Dharma taught by the Blessed One in this way," then the other bhikṣus should say to that bhikṣu, "Reverend, how do you understand that those things that the Blessed One has said to be obstructive will not be obstructive even if practiced? How do you understand the Dharma taught by the Blessed One in this way?"

Do not say, "I understand," do not slander the Bhagavan. Slandering the Bhagavan will not make things better. The Bhagavan would not say such a thing. Venerable one, the very nature of obstructive teachings is obstruction. The Bhagavan has spoken of this in many ways. If one relies on those, it will become an obstruction. Venerable one, abandon such sinful views that you have! The monks should admonish that monk in this way. If he does not abandon it, then for the sake of abandoning that thing, he should be properly admonished three times. He should be properly instructed. If, after being properly admonished and properly instructed two or three times, he abandons that thing, then it is good. If he does not abandon it, it is a downfall. When the Buddha was dwelling in Shravasti, there was a monk who had ordained from being a cowherd, named Aritha. He said, "Even if one relies on everything from the Parajika to many training precepts, it will not become an obstruction." The Sangha admonished him three times, but he did not listen, and thus the rule was established. In that way, if that monk, without confessing his downfall, enters into the Sangha's actions of petition and request, he will incur one offense for each of the nine entries. If the Sangha does not assemble and admonish according to the Dharma, or if it assembles but does not admonish according to the Dharma, there is no downfall. First, admonish once with gentle words. If the Sangha assembles and admonishes three times according to the Dharma and he listens, then four offenses and one downfall will occur. In that way, that monk, until he confesses his downfall, should not be expelled from any monk, but should be placed in secret. Whichever monk speaks those words, whichever monk does not act according to the Dharma, and does not abandon sinful views, knowing it, speaks, speaks everywhere, dwells, acts, and sleeps in the same house with him, will fall into downfall. When the Buddha was dwelling in Shravasti, the monk Aritha, having performed the act of abandonment, went weeping to the presence of Nanda. Nanda said, "Stay and I will endure." Then, associating with him, sleeping together, acting everywhere. Therefore, the monks with few desires observed, and thus the rule was established. A monk who has been cut off by the precepts and abandoned, speaking or conversing with him
