It is not so. The large measure is the amount of six handfuls of dried rice. If vegetables and beans are added, it should not touch the area of the thumb on the karana. The small measure is the amount of one handful of dried rice, and the vegetables and beans are the same as before. The medium measure is between the large and small. If the alms bowl is filled to one-third with the large measure, taking it is a misdeed, and eating it will cause one to fall. If two are large and one is medium, it will be the same. If two are large and one is small, it will also be the same. If it is taken like soup, it is a misdeed even if it is not given to four monks. Furthermore, if a monk has finished eating and does not give the leftovers, and then prepares, eats, or cooks food, he will fall. When the Buddha was dwelling in Shravasti, he instructed the monks to make an offering and not to finish the food. The group of six monks increased the amount, and even after eating, the monks with few desires criticized them and the rule was established. If one has made an offering and thinks that it has been made, and does not leave any leftovers but prepares or cooks food, or if one eats while doubting whether an offering has been made, one will fall. It is not needed! Give! Go! It is finished! Enough! Eating while saying such things will cause one to fall. If one has not made an offering but thinks that an offering has been made, or if one eats while in doubt, one will commit a misdeed. The mantra for leftovers is that after eating and making an offering, if food or drink comes, if one wants it, one should give and take. Whether a friend has offered the food or not, without getting up from the seat, go to one person and squat down, saying: "Please listen, venerable one, my name is so-and-so, I have made an offering after eating, and although I will be full, I also want to eat the food that I have obtained, so please leave me some leftovers." That person should also eat two or three mouthfuls, and then say: "Now this is yours, eat it." In these five ways, it will not become leftovers, namely, doing it from outside the boundary, doing it from an inappropriate direction, doing it from behind, doing it suddenly, and doing it with improper conduct. If one has eaten and said enough, it is okay to eat again, or if one has said enough and stood up, it is okay to eat again.

It becomes a downfall. If one gets up from eating tsampa, if the tsampa has not been touched by anyone, the giving and receiving will not be invalidated. When getting up, if the tsampa has not been discarded, it can still be eaten later. Also, if a certain bhikshu knows that a certain bhikshu's food has been eaten and discarded, he looks for an excuse, thinking that he must make this bhikshu commit a mistake. Therefore, if one uses food to force this venerable one to eat or drink, so that he does not leave any leftovers, it becomes a downfall. When the Buddha was staying in Shravasti, an old householder was ordained by an ascetic bhikshu. The disciple of this ascetic, a new bhikshu, promised to be his teacher and entrusted him to him. This old renunciant, because of his failing memory, often committed downfalls, so the attendant called him and made him squat in front and made him confess his downfalls. After that, this old renunciant thought, this teacher also made me confess my downfalls once in front of him. At another time, a householder invited the Sangha for a meal, and the old renunciant and the attendant also ate tsampa, and the householder watched there like watching a play. After that, the householder gave food and drink, and the two of them returned and went to Jeta Grove, and the teacher sent the old renunciant to let those bhikshus leave the remaining food there, and he said that my share had been left, and those given by the teacher had not been left, and in order to punish him, after eating, the old renunciant said: Teacher, you have committed the downfall of eating without leaving any leftovers, confess in front of me. Because of the persuasion of the bhikshu with few desires, the precepts were established. In order to harm the bhikshu, after eating, if one forces him to eat the remaining food, it becomes a downfall. If the eater also knows that eating will cause a downfall, it becomes a downfall. If one does not know, there is no fault. Eating together, unless it is time, it becomes a downfall. The time is when one is sick, when one is working, when one is on the road, when there is a big festival, and when it is time for the food of the practitioners. That is the time. When the Buddha was staying in the Bamboo Grove Monastery in Rajagriha, the bhikshu Devadatta disagreed with the other bhikshus.
