Seeing that the group of six monks did not eat the food well, (the Sangha) became unhappy and reported to the Buddha: If some noble ones do not enjoy the offerings well, will I not be reborn in (your) land? (The Buddha) therefore established the precepts. When the Buddha was staying by the Monkey Pool in Vaishali, a harsh householder invited the Sangha, but one bhikkhu and the group of six bhikkhus went to a house on the side of the road and ate mangoes. When the harsh householder heard about this, he established the precept that the group of six bhikkhus should not behave improperly in the queue. Furthermore, unless permission is granted, one should not eat repeatedly. Some donors only give a little food, such as only a little for a child, or only a little hot food. If one eats more than twice in one morning, one will commit a downfall. For those who, like the sick, cannot sustain themselves with one meal, or those who work for the Sangha or the stupa, or even just sweep the floor a little, or just tidy up the sleeping place, or walk one yojana on the road, or half a yojana, or walk half a yojana and return, (one can eat repeatedly). When giving clothes, from one cubit to four cubits can be given, these are the situations in which one can eat repeatedly. If there is no clothing or the price of clothing, and both are called out at the same time, then the first one called out can be eaten, and the latter one should be abandoned. If one first calls out something without clothing or the price of clothing, and later calls out something with the price of clothing, then both can be eaten without fault. If both the former and the latter have clothing, then it can be eaten. If there is no price of clothing, and both are called out at the same time, and one promises not to eat, then one commits a misdeed. If there is a famine and one cannot find satisfaction, then there is no fault in eating repeatedly. Staying overnight in a common dwelling, if one is not a bhikkhu, one should eat together. If one eats more than that, one will commit a downfall. When the Buddha was staying in Shravasti, in a rocky village, there was a householder who built a dwelling for the Sangha of the four directions and the Brahmins, and there he prepared food for the season. Because the power of the Buddha's great miracles suppressed all the heretics, sixty naked heretics came to that rocky village, and that householder provided them with food and let them stay. Later, a faithful householder came from elsewhere, and the two householders of the rocky village seized those naked heretics, and that householder said: Friend...

Asked, "Are the grain seeds good?" The Dharma-devotee said, "Householder devotee, the seeds you have sown are excellent, but the field does not produce saline soil." A naked ascetic looked with malice. Those naked ascetics also settled down. The householder devotee provided for the livelihood of the practitioners. The Dharma-devotee invited the monks, and the group of six monks went to that rocky place. The householder provided for their livelihood. Then, sixty naked ascetics took turns beating the group of six monks, but they could not harm them. Then, the group of six monks beat the naked ascetics, causing them severe injuries. They wailed, "We have destroyed your dwelling." Therefore, the rule was established: When residing in a common place, an offense is committed. If food is eaten, one will fall. Residing there and eating food in secret is an offense. Residing in secret and eating food there, one will fall. If the benefactor is a relative monk, or if the benefactor says, "Stay," there is no offense. The affliction here is the first. Regarding permission for illness: It is like the rule established because Shariputra was allowed to reside due to having a wind disease. Many monks enter houses. If those Brahmins or devout householders want to give flour or food, the monks should take two or three full bowls. If more than that is taken, there will be a downfall. After taking two or three full bowls, they should say outside where the Sangha gathers, "We should also eat, and we should also distribute to the residing monks, now is the time." When the Buddha was residing in Shravasti, a householder had a blind daughter. Before she grew up, no one wanted her. A householder married seven wives in succession, and they all died. After that, even widows were unwilling to live with him, so he married the blind daughter. Later, at the wedding, the blind daughter's mother prepared a lot of food. The group of six monks went there and asked the old woman for food. The old woman Lamoche also filled their bowls with food, causing the wedding food to be insufficient. The groom was angry and abandoned the blind daughter. The householder and the old woman no longer trusted them, therefore the rule was established. Three kinds of bowls.
