unless due to other reasons, it is a downfall. When the Buddha was dwelling in Jeta Grove in Sravasti, a monk named Growth led a group of new monks to seek benefits in another place. On the way, Growth was delayed by talking to people. The students went ahead and arrived at a monastery, set up the teacher's bed and lay down. Later, the monk Growth arrived, very angry, drove the students outside, and abandoned them in the cold. The students lost faith and complained. A monk with few desires therefore established a precept: if the monk Growth, out of anger, by any means, expels or instigates others to expel a monk from the monastery, he will commit a downfall. If he expels a novice, he commits a misdeed. If it is a collective expulsion by the Sangha, or an expulsion for the sake of discipline, there is no offense. Furthermore, if a monk knowingly comes to the Sangha's monastery, knowing that someone will be harmed by it, and forcibly presses on others, lies down or sits on the seat, he will also commit a downfall. Then the students who went ahead arrived at a monastery. They set up the teacher's bed and lay down. Later, the monk Growth arrived, very angry, pressed on the students, and said, "Whoever will be harmed by this, leave!" Then he expelled the students. The students complained. A monk with few desires therefore established a precept. The afflictions of the remainder and these two are unbearable. Furthermore, if a monk knowingly puts weight on a bed or small bed that is easily damaged on the roof or attic of the Sangha's monastery, and sits or presses on it, he will commit a downfall. When the Buddha was dwelling in Jeta Grove in Sravasti, the Venerable Ananda led an ascetic monk to travel. The Venerable Ananda was delayed on the way, and the ascetic monk went ahead to a cave monastery. He not only occupied the Venerable Ananda's bed, but also entered the attic and lay down, while Ananda

A person came and said, "Open the door." The former person said, "Monk, please use Nanda's bedding, and water for washing your feet has also been prepared in the dwelling. Please come in!" Nanda became angry and went to the top of the roof. Directly above where the former person was sleeping, he inserted the leg of a bed without nails into the hole where the chimney was, and sat heavily on it. The bed leg fell and struck his friend's forehead, causing bleeding. Therefore, it was established: If there are no bed nails, no foundation, and one sits on something placed on an unstable surface, it will fall. If there is a foundation or bed nails, there is no offense in sitting on it. Furthermore, if a bhikshu knowingly plants grass, dung, or soil in water containing living beings, or causes others to plant it, it is a downfall. When the Buddha was dwelling in Kaushambi, a bhikshu with faith knowingly used water containing living beings to plant grass, dung, and soil. The bhikshus who wished to help him advised him, "Do not do this." The bhikshu with faith said, "These living beings will not go to the great ocean. What can they do in a small container?" Because of the rebuke of the bhikshu with few desires, it was established: There are two types of living beings: visible and invisible. If one knowingly uses or causes others to use something containing living beings, one commits an offense for each insect that dies. If one uses something believing there are no living beings when there are, or if one is doubtful, one commits a minor offense. If one turns over or blocks a field ridge containing living beings, one commits a minor offense and a downfall for each living being that dies. If a bhikshu is building a large monastery, whether it is for a door, a fixed place, or a place where light first appears, one should start the foundation with stones, alternating bricks and stones, and build two or three stories. If one builds beyond that height, it is a downfall. When the Buddha was dwelling in Kaushambi, the group of six were dwelling in a monastery built by others. They made many comments about the monastery and criticized other bhikshus, saying, "You cannot even lift a single stone, what right do you have to mock us?" The group of six became arrogant, and the bhikshu with faith among them promised to build a monastery. Then,

A faithful person preached the Dharma to a wealthy householder with many possessions, and then obtained many items and completed a three-story monastery in one day. He did not dig a well, did not open windows, and did not set up a fixed place, but made a round building. That night, there was a heavy rain, and the bricks were soaked, causing the monastery to collapse. The benefactor and a monk with few affairs were punished. If a monk builds more than two or three layers of bricks in one day, he will commit a downfall. If it is built with stone or burnt bricks, or dry bricks built with wood, even if it is wetted by water during construction, it will not collapse, then there is no fault in building as many layers as possible. In short: unappointed sunset, food and Dharma robes are both pure, recruiting many ships and secluded places, arranged to be joined by bhikkhunis. The abbreviated sutra is similar to what is said later. Furthermore, if any monk preaches to bhikkhunis without being appointed by the Sangha, unless he is a monk with Dharma characteristics, he will commit a downfall. When the Buddha was residing in Shravasti, the Six Groups of monks went to preach to the bhikkhunis without being appointed as preachers to the bhikkhunis. After they had preached a little Dharma, they showed off, laughed loudly, and pretended. Those who were pleased with the monks were punished. A monk with Dharma characteristics is like a monk who, by guiding the way, recited one verse in one month, and later attained Arhatship. When he taught the bhikkhunis, the minds of many beings were liberated. In reality, it refers to a monk who possesses five qualities. What are the five qualities? Having completed twenty years after ordination, holding the Three Baskets, not having committed a fundamental downfall, possessing the eloquence of a palace attendant, and always repenting of the downfalls committed. If he is not twenty years old, he can be appointed to teach the bhikkhunis until the Sangha convenes. If a residence is not designated, or if a bhikkhuni requests but is not appointed, then the monk will commit a misdeed, and the bhikkhuni will lose one of the heavy Dharmas if she does not request a teacher. Since the eight heavy Dharmas cannot be explained in detail, if he is appointed, he will commit a misdeed. If the two of them preach, they will commit a downfall. Furthermore, a monk is appointed by the Sangha.
