The Pratimoksha of those who strive in discipline, is for the ordained. One should strive to listen, and one should strive to hear, hold, retain, and practice. When the Buddha was about to pass away into Nirvana, the monks asked: When the Buddha was alive, he was our protector and refuge, but after he passed away into Nirvana, we have no teacher, protector, or refuge. In response, the Buddha said: After my Nirvana, that which teaches and instructs like me is this Pratimoksha. You should practice according to its tenets. Among these, "self-arisen" refers to the Buddha himself arising without receiving predictions from others. Doubters may ask: The self-arisen Buddha also did not receive predictions from others, so is he self-arisen. Then, in this case, can we also say it refers to the self-arisen Buddha? The answer is: The self-arisen Buddha does not teach the Dharma through words, but only through miracles. Therefore, it is evident that the one who proclaims the Pratimoksha is the Tathagata. The term "himself" is used in conjunction with praise, not entrusting praise to others, but the self-arisen one praises himself. "Diligence" does not mean praising bad meanings merely because others have entrusted it, but with great diligence, the Buddha manifestly praised among many monks, saying: The Pratimoksha is no different from me. From "monk subdued" to "always protect," this verse shows that one should generate respect for the Pratimoksha. Monk, subdue your senses, "subdue" means that the senses are not distracted by forms and so on, the senses are tamed, and the behavior is peaceful. "All senses" means that subduing the senses as above is not just for a moment, but the senses are always or at all times subdued. Alternatively, "all senses" refers to wisdom, knowing that naturally sinful actions and even minor misdeeds are sins, and therefore not engaging in them. Buddha, unchanging ordained one, those who desire definite liberation, always protect the Pratimoksha. Here, it shows the difficulty of encountering virtuous friends and the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment, because the world is not at leisure.

It is rare to have leisure and endowments, and it is rare to have perfect leisure and endowments and to be endowed with a spiritual friend. What are the eight unfavorable conditions? The birthplaces of the three lower realms, being born as a long-lived god, being born in a borderland, being born with incomplete faculties, becoming a wrongdoer, and even if one is liberated from the above, the Buddha does not appear in the world, these eight. If one is born in these eight places, one's own views are disturbed by afflictions, and it is rare to encounter virtuous Dharma. Thus, it is rare to be liberated from the eight unfavorable conditions and to be born as a human being. It is from the Sutra Collection, like a yoke with a hole in the great ocean, blown in four directions by the winds of the north, south, east, and west, it is difficult to stay in one place, there is a turtle in the ocean, which raises its head above the water once every hundred years, it is possible for the turtle's neck to enter the hole in the yoke, but being born as a human being is even rarer than that. Thus, one has obtained perfect leisure and endowments. It is even rarer than the rare appearance of the Buddha in the world, because by proclaiming the Sutra of Individual Liberation, one is endowed with a perfect spiritual friend. Therefore, one should generate respect for individual liberation and practice it. The so-called "unchanging Buddha ordination" is because you, monks, have renounced the world in order not to change the Buddha himself or the Buddha's teachings. Therefore, if you want to be liberated without being eaten by demons, you should always protect individual liberation. The so-called "definitely" is not for the sake of being born in the heavens, enjoying worldly pleasures, or protecting individual liberation for the sake of profit and respect, but for the sake of definitely and without being eaten by demons, one protects individual liberation in order to be liberated from samsara. Among them, the meaning of the so-called individual liberation will be explained below. At the beginning of individual liberation, before explaining the eight meanings, the verses are proclaimed as above, in order to be in accordance with the meaning of being disgusted with the actions of the three realms of existence. From "kotikalpa" to "extremely difficult to obtain", one verse is from the scriptures.
