and presented it, and offered sixty copper coins as payment. Similarly, for sixty alms-givers, each time going to collect the fee for each bowl, after the alms-givers gathered and talked, Venerable Near-Joy (Ananda) collected the fees for sixty bowls, hence the rule was established. From the arising of the intention to abandon until the object is not abandoned, for any requisites of a renunciate such as bowls and robes, they should also be abandoned through the previous cause. If the bowl is too big or too small, or turns gray, even if held for more than ten days, there is no transgression. Furthermore, if a monk's bowl does not have five patches, it can be used, but desiring a good one, searching for another new bowl, if the bowl is completed, it is a transgression of abandonment. That monk should offer that bowl to the monastic community, and then the monastic community should give that bowl to the last one, and say: Monk, do not bless or give away this bowl, without giving it to others, until it is finally broken, use it carefully and slowly. That is the time. When the Buddha was dwelling in Shravasti, a boy selling incense had a good bowl, he offered it to a begging monk, the monk did not accept it, and this was discussed in the monastic community, Venerable Near-Joy (Ananda) hastened and ran to the incense seller. Then, the incense seller saw a monk approaching, fearing that the bowl would be snatched away, he hid it, and Venerable Near-Joy (Ananda) saw it, recited a verse and took the bowl. Then, the incense seller also did not give it, arguing, and a householder came, prostrated to Venerable Near-Joy (Ananda) and said: What are you going to do with this hand? The householder asked: What does the Venerable want? He said: Buy this bowl and give it to me. Then, the householder bought the bowl and gave it to Venerable Near-Joy (Ananda). Therefore, a rule was established for monks with few desires. If a bowl can be used, but deliberately damaged and a new one is sought, it is a transgression of abandonment. Buying a bowl with money or exchanging good for bad, there is no transgression. If it is dedicated to the Khenpo, Acharya, and Sangha, it is good.

Even if holding it, there is no fault. Furthermore, if a Bhikshu takes yarn that he himself has obtained and has it completely woven by a weaver who is not a relative, and the cloth is finished, it is an offense of expiation. When the Buddha was dwelling in Shravasti, the Bhikshu Nanda, in the Jeta Grove, saw five hundred widows spinning cotton yarn and, praising the merit of generosity, took the yarn. Then those widows gave one ounce of yarn each and entrusted the weaving of a common cloth to a weaver. After it was woven and offered, they again entrusted the weaving of another cloth. But it could not be woven. Nanda informed the minister, the great householder, and even entrusting the weaving of the common cloth to a weaver could not be completed, so they took a laborer to the weaver. Nanda and the weaver both bound and beat the laborer, and also offered the laborer many provisions, and the felt was also woven. The weaver was very distressed, and therefore the rule was established. If one takes yarn from elsewhere and gives the weaver wages to weave, there is no offense. If one buys yarn from another or is given yarn by another and has it woven by a weaver without giving wages, it is an offense. It is permissible to give wages, but if one takes yarn from elsewhere and weaves it oneself or entrusts it to a relative, there is a misdeed. If a householder or the wife of a householder who is not a relative has a cloth woven by a weaver who is not a relative for the sake of a Bhikshu, and if the Bhikshu has some doubts there without having informed them beforehand, he should go to the weaver who is not a relative and say: "Venerable weaver, please know that this cloth is woven for me. Venerable weaver, it would be best if this cloth is well-woven, wide, and without knots." Venerable ones, to the weaver, say this: "I will give you some food or the price of food." Having said this, if the Bhikshu, in order to complete the cloth, gives some food or the price of food like this, and the cloth is finished, it is an offense of expiation. When the Buddha was dwelling in Shravasti, the Bhikshu Nanda preached the Dharma to a householder couple, and the two developed faith and decided to donate a cloth, so they entrusted it to a weaver.
