Different discipline is like the discipline of Devadatta, who specifically does not drink milk to harm calves; does not cut the edges of cloth so that what is done does not become meaningless; does not eat salt because it is the juice of large sugar cane; and does not build monasteries to live in so as not to hinder the merit of many beings. Different views are also found in other non-Buddhist religions. Different conduct refers to different ways of practicing merit and so on. Different livelihoods are like Devadatta living by flattery, soliciting, profiting, and being respected. There are two ways to enter these differences: entering different disciplines and entering different paths. The reason for "to be distinguished" is to be able to obtain more food and more friends. "To take up disputes correctly" means to think in that way. "To fully grasp" means to suppress it in the heart. The admonition of the monks is: even if there are many monks, those who have entered into division should be admonished with careful words. "Make peace" is an admonition, merely a particle of speech. "The Sangha is in harmony" refers to views and so on. "Not to be divided" means to become one, because the Dharma is the same, wealth is the same, and faith is the same. "Universally joyful" means that the aspect of virtue increases. "Not to quarrel" means to be free from bad behavior, that is, not to quarrel with views and so on. "One-pointed" means that the aspect of virtue or like samadhi does not change. "Recitation is one" means that the Pratimoksha is the same. "Water and milk mixed" means to endure with the words of one person, which means not to be separated. "The actions of the Teacher's teachings" refers to teaching and admonishing. In "abiding in the touch of bliss," bliss is the body, and touch is the mind. For this, the admonition is to abandon the unwholesome. "Teaching" is to cause to enter. From "in order to abandon that thing" onwards, the Sangha should admonish three times through the act of petitioning and requesting. Regarding this, if the monk does not abandon it when he first admonishes, he commits a minor offense. If the Sangha admonishes three times through the act of petitioning and requesting, and he does not abandon it, he commits a grave offense on the second time.

If each one, the last of the three, is not relinquished, it becomes a saṃghāvaśeṣa. This saṃghāvaśeṣa will produce one offense, three gross offenses, and one saṃghāvaśeṣa offense, a total of five offenses. If the saṃgha splits without performing the act of admonishment by the saṃgha, it will not become a saṃghāvaśeṣa, and the discipline will be lost. The branches are three; if not relinquished, it becomes a saṃghāvaśeṣa. One or two or many may become friends of that bhikṣu, standing on one side without malice. If those people say to the bhikṣus: "Venerable ones, whether good or bad, do not say anything to this bhikṣu." What is the reason for that? Because this bhikṣu is a speaker of the Dharma, a holder of the Vinaya. This bhikṣu correctly upholds, diligently holds, and practices the Dharma and the Vinaya. This bhikṣu speaks knowingly, not unknowingly. Whatever this bhikṣu believes in and endures, we also believe in and endure. Do not say such things. What is the reason for that? Because this bhikṣu speaks what is not the Dharma, speaks what is not the Vinaya. This bhikṣu speaks what is not the Dharma, speaks what is not the Vinaya. This bhikṣu correctly upholds, diligently holds, and practices what is not the Dharma and what is not the Vinaya. This bhikṣu speaks unknowingly, not knowingly. Venerable ones, do not believe in splitting the saṃgha, but believe in the Vinaya. Venerable ones, harmonize the saṃgha. The saṃgha is harmonious and not split, universally joyful, without disputes, with one mind, speaking in one voice, like water and milk mixed together. If the Teacher's teachings are split, one will not abide in ease. Venerable ones, for those who split the saṃgha in this way, stand on one side and abandon speaking divisive words. Admonish them in this way. In this way, after the bhikṣus admonish the bhikṣus, if they see that he relinquishes that behavior, that is good. If he does not relinquish it, for the sake of relinquishing that behavior, he should be admonished and taught truthfully two or three times. After admonishing and teaching truthfully two or three times, if they see that he relinquishes that behavior, that is good. If he does not relinquish it, it is a saṃghāvaśeṣa. When the Buddha was residing in Rājagṛha, the bhikṣu Devadatta
