If one commits a transgression by engaging in impure conduct with a non-human female, and mistakenly engages in sexual activity with an animal, it constitutes a defeat. If one does not commit a defeat by mistakenly killing an animal, but the animal dies, it becomes a misdeed. Killing non-human deities, demons, or pretas results in a gross offense. Killing livestock with the intention of harming them, or severing limbs, or cutting off human hearts, hands, or toes, or piercing large, unripe abscesses, or burning forests all constitute gross offenses. Entrusting a foolish person with the care of a patient without proper examination, or administering medicine without understanding, results in a serious misdeed. Attempting to kill a person but failing to do so results in a gross offense. Pushing a person towards death with the intention of killing them constitutes a complete defeat; if they do not die, it is a gross offense. The term "person" refers to any being with one of the three lineages, possessing the six sense bases. "Human fetus" refers to that which possesses three faculties: the faculty of life and the faculty of mind. Thus, "person" or "human fetus" indicates a true human being. "Intentionally" means possessing the intention to kill. From "cutting off life with a weapon" to "pursuing with a weapon" refers to killing through physical actions. From "causing to die" to "better to die than to live" refers to the act of killing through speech. These two are called the act of killing. Included in the category of death are: killing oneself, giving a weapon to another to kill, pursuing with a weapon to cause killing, or directing someone towards death, even if death occurs, it constitutes a defeat. Praising death is also done in three ways: to one with qualities, one says, "For someone with qualities like you, liberation is as easy as cutting silk; it is better to die than to remain in this impure world"; to one without qualities, one says, "For someone without qualities like you, living will be very painful"; to a sick person, one says, "For someone tormented by illness like you, it is better to die." The term "you sinner" means that due to sin, one has obtained such a body full of disease. "Impure" refers to a corpse.

The reason is defilement, meaning it arises from a place of defilement. A bad livelihood refers to living by various harms or being born in a place of meager enjoyment. What is called 'desiring in the mind' refers to, if that monk dies, speaking of death in order to hope to obtain the Dharma robe and alms bowl. 'Completely contemplating in the mind' refers to, no matter what method is used to kill the superior, knowing that he did not die from being eaten by spirits. 'Done until death' refers to the cessation of the life force of life. By killing a person, a threefold downfall occurs: the misdeed of action, the gross sin of action, and the fundamental defeat. Furthermore, if a certain monk, without having realized or fully understood, claims to have attained superior qualities beyond ordinary people, as well as the distinction of liberation and noble ones, and for things without knowledge, without vision, without experience, falsely claims to know and see what he does not, thereby considering himself pure. At that time, no matter how long it has been, whether asked or not, he says: 'Venerable ones, I say I know what I do not know, and I say I see what I do not see,' thus speaking falsely and deceitfully. Apart from being arrogant, this monk is also defeated and should not dwell with others. When the Buddha was dwelling in the splendorous mango grove of the Spriu Pond in the vast city of Vaisali, he explained the ripening results of aquatic fish to five hundred fishermen. When they became disgusted and wanted to abandon it, a great famine occurred, and five hundred monks built huts near the fishermen's villages, thinking: 'If we do not show each other's merits, then others will not be able to dispel doubts about relatives and friends, and we will not be able to obtain food.' So they said to the villagers: 'You have obtained great benefits!' What are they like? These monks all have the concept of impermanence and have all obtained the superior qualities of noble ones from Arhat to the Eight Liberations. So those householders even snatched food from their own children's mouths and always offered alms to those monks. When the matter arose, they told the Buddha about obtaining offerings, so the precepts were established, established out of arrogance.
