Improper conduct refers to the two orifices of a male and the three orifices of a female. Whichever orifice is penetrated, if one experiences three kinds of pleasurable sensations upon penetration, it constitutes a defeat. The meaning of the word 'defeat' is to be defeated by afflictions. Engaging in sexual activity with a damaged orifice constitutes a gross offense. 'Damaged' refers to being wounded, torn, or having grains entered, and so forth. Even if penetration occurs, it does not constitute a defeat. There are also four types of gross offenses: fear, shame, unsuitability, and non-contact. An example of fear is when a monk is in a secluded monastery and is seduced by a naga or a dragon maiden who transforms into a woman and engages in improper conduct. She then transforms into a snake, causing great fear and no pleasurable sensation. An example of shame is when a monk, without witnessing improper conduct, asks, 'Is it possible for even the first husband to penetrate a woman's genitals?' and then engages in sexual activity without experiencing pleasure. An example of unsuitability is when the male organ becomes impotent after being inserted into any orifice. An example of non-contact is when the male organ is inserted into the untouched female genitals, which are as wide as an elephant's genitals, resulting in no pleasurable sensation. The circumstances under which one is defeated are when sexual activity is engaged in with the three roots (referring to male, female, and non-binary individuals), whether living or with a dead corpse, as long as the three orifices are not damaged, it constitutes a defeat. Similarly, with animals, pretas, gods, and non-humans, whether living or with a dead corpse, if the orifices are not damaged, engaging in sexual activity constitutes a defeat. In the cases mentioned above, whether living or not, if the orifices are damaged, it constitutes a gross offense. What is permissible for bestowing vows is as follows: For example, a monk named Delightful Meditator, while residing in a monastery, is seduced by a demon's daughter and, immediately after engaging in improper conduct, feels great remorse as if he were dead. He immediately confesses and vows to perform actions that atone for the transgression in this lifetime. He is then designated as a monk who bestows vows and is placed at the end of the line of monks. What is not to be dwelt with is not that those who have committed gross offenses or those who bestow vows are not to be dwelt with. It is only when a defeat has occurred that one cannot participate in the sangha's karmic activities, and therefore one is not to be dwelt with. Whatever defeat is committed, the transgressions include: the misdeed of preparation, the gross offense of preparation, and the root defeat.
