Entered. The group of six monks, seeing the listeners not seated, themselves stood and taught the Dharma; seeing the listeners not lying down, themselves sat and taught the Dharma; seeing the listeners not sitting on a high seat, themselves sat on a low seat and taught the Dharma; seeing the listeners walking in front, themselves walked behind and taught the Dharma; seeing the listeners walking on the road, themselves walked on the side of the road and taught the Dharma; seeing the listeners not covering their heads, not wrapping their heads, not tilting their heads, not crossing their necks, not turning their necks back, they taught the Dharma; seeing the listeners not wearing hair buns, not wearing hats, not wearing crowns, not wearing garlands, not wearing headbands, they taught the Dharma; seeing the listeners not riding elephants, not riding horses, not sitting in palanquins, not sitting on seats, not wearing shoes, they taught the Dharma; seeing the listeners not holding canes in their hands, not holding umbrellas in their hands, not holding weapons in their hands, not holding swords in their hands, not holding armaments in their hands, not wearing armor, they taught the Dharma. Then the Brahmins and faithful householders, filled with joy and respect, rebuked them, saying, 'The Blessed One endured hardships for three countless eons, perfected countless hundreds of thousands of the six perfections, and then attained unsurpassed wisdom. Yet you, while the listeners are not seated, are disrespectful in their seating, and so on, do you teach the Dharma while standing and so on?' They remained silent and speechless. At that time, the monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed, 'Therefore, my Shravaka disciples should recite the basis of learning in the Vinaya as follows: When not seated, standing and teaching the Dharma, one should train not to teach. When not lying down, sitting and teaching the Dharma, one should train not to teach. When not sitting on a high seat, sitting on a low seat and teaching the Dharma, one should train not to teach. When not walking in front, walking behind and teaching the Dharma, one should train not to teach. When not walking on the road, walking on the side of the road and teaching the Dharma, one should train not to teach. Not covering the head, not wrapping the head, not tilting the head, not crossing the neck,'

It should be taught not to teach the Dharma to those with their backs crossed. It should be taught not to teach the Dharma to those with hair in a topknot, wearing a hat, wearing a crown, wearing a garland, or with a turban. It should be taught not to teach the Dharma to those riding an elephant, riding a horse, sitting in a palanquin, sitting on a mount, or wearing shoes. It should be taught not to teach the Dharma to those holding a staff in their hand, holding an umbrella in their hand, holding a weapon in their hand, holding a sword in their hand, holding a weapon of war in their hand, or wearing armor. Thus the Bhagavan made the rules. The place was Shravasti (མཉན་ཡོད།). The persons were the Group of Six. The afflictions were not knowing the scriptures and the world. The faults are that the listener is sitting, and oneself is standing and teaching the Dharma, etc. These twenty-six precepts should be applied individually according to the circumstances to the faults of not having done so. Among them, the rule "One should be taught not to stand and teach the Dharma to one who is sitting" means that a monk should be taught not to stand and teach the Dharma to a listener who is sitting. These twenty-six precepts, beginning with "One should be taught not to stand and teach the Dharma to one who is sitting," are the concise explanation and detailed exposition of the precepts of respecting the Dharma spoken from the auspicious throat of the Buddha Bhagavan, who, through the knowledge of the scriptures and the world, practiced austerities for three countless eons, perfected the six perfections with countless hundreds of thousands of austerities, and attained unsurpassed wisdom. It is not an explanation in any other way. The rule "One should be taught not to sit and teach the Dharma to one who is lying down" means that a monk should be taught not to sit and teach the Dharma to a listener who is lying down. The rule "One should be taught not to sit on a low seat and teach the Dharma to one who is sitting on a high seat" means that a monk should be taught not to sit on a low seat and teach the Dharma to a listener who is sitting on a high seat. Here, the word "seat" should also be understood to include the place of sitting. The quality of the seat, whether good or bad, is also the same, that is, when the height of the seats is equal.
