Then, prohibiting the use of the alms bowl to draw water, if the bowl fell and was carried away by the water, the monks reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One, as before, instructed not to place the alms bowl in a place without a foundation. He instructed to place the alms bowl in a place that is not a cliff, not a ravine, and not a steep slope. He instructed not to wash the alms bowl while standing. He instructed to wash the alms bowl in a place that is not a cliff, not a ravine, and not a steep slope. He instructed not to use the alms bowl to draw water against the current of a strong river. Thus, the precepts were established. The place was Śrāvastī. The persons were the monks who held these precepts. The affliction was non-mindfulness. The offense was a place without a foundation, placing the alms bowl on a cliff, ravine, and steep slope, washing the alms bowl while standing on a cliff and steep slope, and using the alms bowl to draw water against the current of a strong river. The so-called not placing the alms bowl in a place without a foundation means not placing the alms bowl in a place without a foundation that is not covered by leaves, etc. The so-called not a cliff means not the edge of a cliff with a broken face. The so-called not a ravine means not an inclined ravine. The so-called not a steep slope means not a slope with four steps. The so-called standing means standing upright. The so-called not using the alms bowl to draw water against the current of a strong river means not using the alms bowl to draw water against the current of a strong river. Therefore, do not commit those wrongdoings with the alms bowl, but cherish the alms bowl as you would cherish your own eyes. Here, classifying those fundamental downfalls, if one does not act accordingly in the fundamental situation, it will become the root of an act of wrongdoing that needs to be confessed. The agents of these are placing the alms bowl in a place without a foundation, a cliff and a ravine, a steep slope, standing, and acting against the current of a strong river. The limbs of these are each one, which is the accomplishment of the fundamental. The application and the accomplishment of the application of the application.

For those things that are not in accordance with the Dharma, one should rebuke them, just as mentioned before. One should learn not to discard leftover food by pouring it into the alms bowl. From this point onwards, up to the statement that one should protect the alms bowl as one would protect one's eyes, all of this is a concise summary and detailed explanation of the precepts that have been spoken. Adding these nine precepts to the previous seventy-three precepts, the total becomes eighty-two. In summary, the sutra summarizing the precepts that states, "Standing and so on, five," is as follows: One should learn not to stand and teach the Dharma while others are sitting. One should learn not to sit and teach the Dharma while others are lying down. One should learn not to sit on a high seat and teach the Dharma to someone who is not ill, but rather sit on a low seat. One should learn not to walk in front and teach the Dharma, but rather walk behind. One should learn not to walk on the road and teach the Dharma, but rather walk on the side of the road. These are the precepts. In summary, the sutra summarizing the precepts that states, "Head covering and so on, five kinds," is as follows: One should learn not to teach the Dharma to someone who is not ill and is covering their head, wrapping their head, tilting their head, crossing their neck, or crossing the back of their head. These are the precepts. In summary, the sutra summarizing the precepts that states, "One with a hair knot and so on, five kinds," is as follows: One should learn not to teach the Dharma to someone with a hair knot, someone wearing a hat, someone with a crest on their head, someone with a garland on their head, or someone with a turban on their head. These are the precepts. In summary, the sutra summarizing the precepts that states, "Elephant and so on, five mounts," is as follows: One should learn not to teach the Dharma to someone riding an elephant, someone riding a horse, someone sitting in a palanquin, someone sitting on a mount, or someone wearing shoes. These are the precepts. In summary, the sutra summarizing the precepts that states, "Holding a staff and so on, six," is as follows: One should learn not to teach the Dharma to someone holding a staff, someone holding an umbrella, someone holding a weapon, someone holding a sword, someone holding a tool of war, or someone wearing armor. These are the precepts. The origin of these twenty-six precepts is as follows: The Blessed One, the Buddha, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, at Anathapindika's monastery.
