Ro! The seventy-second training is complete. The Extensive Commentary on the Pratimoksha Sutra, Collected from the Vinaya, Volume Forty-Six. The verse states: The alms bowl also has ten aspects. The sutra summarizing the trainings, as spoken, is: One should train to put leftover food into the alms bowl and not discard it. One should train not to place the alms bowl on a place without a base. One should train to place the alms bowl in a place that is not a garbage heap, not a cliff, and not steep. One should train not to wash the alms bowl while standing. One should train to wash the alms bowl in a place that is not a garbage heap, not a cliff, and not steep. One should train to avoid strong currents of flowing water and not to scoop water with the alms bowl. These are the things (to be trained in). Among them, the origin story for the training of putting leftover food into the alms bowl and not discarding it is: The Buddha Bhagavan was residing in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. In Shravasti, there lived a Brahmin who had boils. He went to a doctor and said: O handsome one, please show me medicine for my boils. The doctor was a faithful person, so he said: Brahmin, bathe with the water from the alms bowls of the noble ones. He went to Jeta Grove and said to Nanda: Noble one, my son has leprosy. If the noble ones could grant me some water from their alms bowls, that would be wonderful. Nanda said: Brahmin, wait here for a moment, and I will bring water from the alms bowl. He went to the monastery and put a small amount of flour, a small amount of rice, a small amount of meat, and a small amount of bones into the alms bowl, and then came out and said: Brahmin, take it! The Brahmin saw it and said: Noble one, is the water from your alms bowl like this? Brahmin, it is like this. Noble one, it would be better if my son died, for it is not right to wash with such unclean things. While he was saying this, the monks reported it to the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan said as before: One should train to put leftover food into the alms bowl and not discard it. Like this, whoever asks for water from the alms bowl, one should (act accordingly).

The rule was established that the bowl should be washed three times, and after reciting the verses of the monastery, the water from the bowl should be given as alms. The place was Śrāvastī. The persons were the Group of Six. The affliction was contempt. The offense was pouring leftover food into the bowl. Pouring leftover food into the bowl and not discarding it means that for fruits and the like that have been half-eaten and have become bad, one should be taught not to discard them with the bowl. This is a brief explanation of the teaching, "The bowl should be cared for as one's own eyes," and the nine that appear below, such as teaching not to place the bowl on a place without a foundation, are elaborations on this, and not explanations of other aspects. Here, the determination of the root downfall is that in the actual situation, if one does not do as taught, it will become the root of an evil deed that should be confessed. The agent here is the bowl and the leftover food itself. The branch here is the actual practice itself. As for the combination and the practice of combination, it should be reproached as appropriate, and this is the same as before. The seventy-third precept. The basis for the nine precepts of teaching not to place the bowl on a place without a foundation, and teaching to place the bowl in a place that is not a garbage heap, not a cliff, and not a steep slope, and teaching not to wash the bowl while standing, and washing the bowl in a place that is not a garbage heap, not a cliff, and not a steep slope, and teaching not to draw water with the bowl against the current of a strong river is: The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Garden. Monks were placing their bowls on places without a foundation, and as a result, they were eaten by insects, and they were placing their bowls on garbage heaps, cliffs, and steep slopes, and as a result, they rolled and broke, and they were washing their bowls while standing, and as a result, they slipped and broke, and they were washing their bowls on garbage heaps, cliffs, and steep slopes, and as a result, they slipped, rolled, and broke, and against the current of a strong river
