The Immaculate Friend. "The Extensive Commentary on the Pratimoksha Sutra, Collected from the Vinaya," Volume Thirty-Nine. The origin of the downfall caused by hearing is: The Buddha Bhagavan was residing in Anathapindika's Grove in Jeta's Grove in Shravasti. At that time, the venerable Charka, having abandoned all defilements, directly realized the state of an Arhat. The venerable Dumba went to कौशाम्बी (Sanskrit Devanagari, kauśāmbī, Sanskrit Romanization, कौशाम्बी, meaning Kauśāmbī) and stayed in a small hut. Traveler and Nabso, the two, their time had come. Gawa and Nye-ga, the two, were staying in the Sangha. At that time, the assembly of the seventeen groups were fierce and oppressive to others, becoming holders of the Sutras, holders of the Vinaya, and holders of the Matrikas. They said: Venerable ones, we have been obstructed by the group of six for a long time. Just as Gawa and Nye-ga obstructed each other, others have not obstructed us. Just as Nye-ga obstructed, I have not been obstructed by Gawa. Let's do the act of expelling him from this place. They said: This person's elder brother, Gawa, is skilled in debate, come, let's discuss it. Saying this, they entered the judgment hall, closed the door, and began to discuss. Nye-ga listened from the window and threatened them, saying: Alas, assembly of the seventeen groups, why are you discussing? Some of us, who practice celibacy, have completely passed into Nirvana. Some are only staying in small huts. Some, their time has come, do you think we should now do the act of expelling this person from this place? Do you think you can now subdue us and stay? We will also impose a great restriction on you. Have you not heard: The rope of the elephant is the sun, And completely dried by the wind, Even if it falls from the elephant's back, Five hundred sheep can pull it. Saying this, he threatened them. They thought: This person is eavesdropping on our discussion, let's go elsewhere. Saying this, they entered the fire room and began to discuss. Nye-ga also secretly came there and listened.

And he threatened them there in the same way. Nanda said: I will forgive you. Those people asked him: How do you know that we are discussing things? Nanda explained the situation in detail, and those people said: Can you not eavesdrop? Nanda said: If I do not eavesdrop when you are discussing things, then you can do the work of driving me out of here, after saying that, because of the few monks, the monks began to fight among themselves, exposing each other's shortcomings, disagreeing, arguing, when they were sitting, these monks thought, I will listen to what these monks are saying, and then give them names like this and that, for this reason,

Therefore, the rule was established that if one eavesdrops, one commits a downfall. The place is Shravasti (Sanskrit: Śrāvastī). The person is Nanda. The affliction is the thought of gloating. The offense is eavesdropping on a disputatious conversation. Among them, "bhikshu" refers to the son of Shakya, Nanda, or anyone else like him. "Bhikshus" refers to those who believe in this Dharma. To quarrel, to expose faults, to disagree, to argue and abide, refers to abiding separately on one side and the other. Thinking, "I will listen to what these bhikshus are saying, and then establish names for them in this way," refers to wanting to suppress the other party in that way with such a thought of remedy. "Because of that" means it is not something else. "Sitting and eavesdropping without speaking" means sitting and focusing on listening without saying anything. "Committing a downfall" means the same as before. So, how does a downfall occur? Here, one must understand the characteristics of this precept through the actual basis, the preparation, the preparation of the preparation for establishing the downfall, as well as the absence of downfall, what should be learned, and what should be confessed. Among them, here, the establishment of the actual basis for downfall is: when bhikshus are in dispute and consulting with other bhikshus, except for wanting to pacify the dispute, because of being focused on creating confusion and listening, and understanding the meaning of the sound; or, except for being lost or wanting to pacify the dispute, because of other purposes, spying and knowing, without making it known with the sound of footsteps, bells, or coughing, then it will become the actual basis of the downfall caused by eavesdropping. There is no fault in the basis of the dispute of bhikshus who are in dispute with bhikshus, and in consulting with them, and in how many bhikshus there are, or in anyone. There is no fault in the upper floor, middle floor, lower floor, dwelling, corridor, gatehouse, staircase, building, monastery, road, side road, or any other place. There is no fault in being focused on creating confusion except for wanting to pacify the dispute. For the sake of listening,
