The basis for learning to eat food without making a smacking sound is as follows: The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Garden, in Shravasti. The Six Groups, when eating food in other people's homes, would make a smacking sound, and were seen by Brahmins and faithful householders, who scolded them, saying: "Venerables, children and mutes eat like this, which is not proper. Do not do this!" They said: "Good sirs, there is a need for this." "Venerables, what need is there for this? Firstly, you yourselves are ignorant and unlearned." Having heard them scolding extensively, the monks at that time reported it to the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan thought: "What the householders say is true." As before, he made the rule that one should learn to eat food without making a smacking sound. The place was Shravasti, the individuals were the Six Groups, the affliction was impropriety, and the fault was making a smacking sound while eating. The term "without making a smacking sound" means not eating food with the tongue touching the palate. One should learn to eat food well in this way. Here, the actual offense is established as follows: if one does not learn in that way in the actual situation, it becomes an actual offense of wrongdoing that must be confessed. The agents here are the smacking sound and the food itself. Here, too, there is only one branch, which is the actual accomplishment itself. Regarding the preparation and the accomplishment of the preparation, if there is anything inappropriate, it will be reproached as before. This is the sixty-second training. The basis for learning to eat food without cutting it in half is as follows: The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Garden, in Shravasti. The Six Groups, when eating food in other people's homes, would take a mouthful and put half in their mouth and half would fall into their bowl, and were seen by Brahmins and faithful householders, who scolded them, saying: "Venerables, children and prostitutes eat like this, which is not proper. Do not eat like this!" They said: "Wise ones, there is a

There is a need. Noble ones, what is the need for this? First of all, you yourselves must be free from ignorance and must learn. Having heard them greatly reviling, at that time the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One thought, 'What the householders say is true,' and so, as before, he established the precept of eating without biting off food. The place was Shravasti; the persons were the group of six; the affliction was that which is not in accordance with the Dharma; the fault was biting off and eating food. Among these, 'One should train in eating food without biting it off' means that one should not bite off and eat food, therefore one should train well in eating food. Among these, here, the classification of the root downfall is that if one does not train in that way in the situation of the root, it will become the root of the misdeed to be confessed. The agent here is biting off food and the food itself. The branch here is only one, namely the accomplishment of the root. Regarding the combination and the accomplishment of the combination of combinations, if there is anything suitable, it will be blamed, and this is also the same as before. The sixty-third precept. In summary, there are 'five, such as licking the hand.' The sutra that summarizes the precepts that were spoken is that one should train in not licking the hand, not wiping the bowl, not shaking the hand, not shaking the bowl, and not eating food after making something that looks like a stupa. Among these, regarding the basis for training in eating food without licking the hand, the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Shravasti in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. The group of six, when eating food in other people's houses, would lick their hands, and the monks said, 'Venerable ones, why do you do such unseemly things?' They said, 'Venerable ones, the essence is attached to this.' At the time when they were reviling, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One, as before, established the precept that one should train in eating food without licking the hand. The place was Shravasti; the persons were the group of six; the affliction was unseemliness; the fault was licking the hand while eating food.
