Prayers to the departed, and the Blessed One considered: 'What the householders say is true.' Thinking thus, as before, monks should be taught not to cross their legs, but to sit on a seat in another's house. The place where this precept was established was Kapilavastu. The persons were the group of six. The affliction was impropriety. The offense was crossing the legs and sitting on a seat in another's house. 'Not crossing the legs' means not sitting with one leg placed on top of the other. Therefore, monks should be taught to sit on a seat in another's house. Here, the actual transgression is established as follows: if one does not practice in this way in the actual situation, it becomes the actual situation of a misdeed that must be confessed. The agent of this is crossing the legs and sitting down. For this, there is only one branch, which is the actual practice. Regarding the preliminary and the preliminary of the preliminary practice, one should be reproached as appropriate, as mentioned before. The thirty-fifth precept is complete. The basis for the precept that monks should be taught not to place their shins on top of each other, but to sit on a seat in another's house, is as follows: The Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying in the Nyagrodha Grove in Kapilavastu. The group of six were placing their shins on top of each other and sitting in another's house, and were seen by Brahmins and faithful householders, who reproached them, saying: 'Venerables, you are like mutes, gamblers, and sons of reeds. This is improper, do not sit like this.' They said: 'Wise ones, there is a need for this.' 'Venerables, what is the need? First of all, you yourselves do not understand and have been taught.' Hearing their extensive reproach, at that time the monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One considered: 'What the householders say is true.' Thinking thus, as before, monks should be taught not to place their shins on top of each other, but to sit on a seat in another's house. The place where this precept was established was Kapilavastu. The persons were the group of six. The affliction was impropriety. The offense was placing the shins on top of each other and sitting on a seat in another's house.

One should not sit with a cushion placed on top of another cushion; one should be trained to sit on a cushion in another's house. Here, the laying out of the actual transgression is that if one does not train in that way in the actual circumstance, then the fundamental [transgression] becomes a fundamental of a misdeed to be confessed. The agent here is placing a cushion on top of another cushion and sitting. The limb here is one, namely, the accomplishment of the actual [transgression]. As for the preparation and the accomplishment of the preparation of the preparation, it is to be reproached as appropriate, and this is the same as before. The thirty-sixth precept. The basis for what is to be trained, to sit on a cushion in a house without moving the feet, is: The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in the Nyagrodha Garden in Kapilavastu. When the group of six were bending their legs and sitting in another's house, some female lay followers arrived and prostrated. They said, "Arogyami." Those [monks] said, "Venerable ones, why do you say 'Arogyami'?" They said, "You have not prostrated to our feet." When they prostrated to the feet of those [monks], they measured with their buttocks, and said, "Ananda and Upali, look at the difference in the size of their buttocks!" Those [women] were ashamed and did not speak. The monks reported this to the Bhagavan, and the Bhagavan, as before, made the enactment that one should be trained to sit on a cushion in another's house without bending the legs. The place was Kapilavastu, the persons were the group of six, the affliction was mutual harm, the fault was bending the legs and sitting on a cushion in another's house. That which is called not bending the legs is that one should not sit with the two legs bent together; one should be trained to sit on a cushion in another's house in that way. Here, the laying out of the actual transgression is that if one does not train in that way in the actual circumstance, then the fundamental [transgression] becomes a fundamental of a misdeed to be confessed. The agent here is bending the legs and sitting. The limb here is one, namely, the accomplishment of the actual [transgression]. As for the preparation and the accomplishment of the preparation of the preparation, it is to be reproached as appropriate, and this is the same as before. The thirty-seventh precept. Feet
